Not Engaged Yet

Hello!

I'm new to the site. I'm in a friend's wedding this year, so I'm kind of cruising around helping her plan things. I like message boards, so I figured I'd join up and chat. I'm not engaged, so I feel kind of weird, but everyone seems friendly and fun to talk to. I was so happy to find this board!

My boyfriend and I have talked about marriage a lot, but he hasn't proposed yet. Even though we've been together for two years, he just moved to Michigan about ten months ago, so we had a bit of an adjustment period.

My family and friends have been pressuring us a LOT, but we try to shrug it off. I know they're just excited, and it's nice to know they like him so much.

Re: Hello!

  • Hi! Welcome to the boards!

I feel your pain when it comes to pressure from family and friends. Sometimes I think they are more anxious for us to get engaged than I am.

Tell us about yourself! Do you like Harry Potter or Hunger Games? How do you spend your free time?

  • Welcome! Everyone will ask how you like your potatoes and what kind of cheese you like. Oh and how you feel about Harry Potter.

I care most about fur babies. Do you have any? Bonus points for pictures!

I get where you're coming from BTW, with the friends/family pressure. My mom told me the first time she met my BF that I should marry him. I wasn't even considering that at the time! I still get asked all the time "So, when's it going to be?" especially everytime someone younger in the family gets engaged (I have a big family, so it's happened a few times...)

  • Welcome to the boards! What do you like to do in your free time? Tell us about your wine preferences (red, white, boxed!! Haha! No judgementsSmile). Best book you've read recently? And I'm out of questions.
  • Hey there! Do you hate Twilight? I saw that you mentioned it in the names thread. If you supply correct answers to that question and to Beth's question about Harry Potter, we just might become friends.

Welcome welcome! You seem pretty sane so you're already on my "I like" list!

The others have already done a wonderful job of questioning you, so I want to add a few of my own! How did you meet your BF? How old are you? What's your favorite wine? Do you cook?

As for the whole "pressuring" you to get married thing. Aww, I totally understand! FI and I were together nearly 5 years before he proposed (just about 2 weeks ago now) and many of our friends and family were wondering "what's the hold up". Seriously, I think some people only hear years together, and forget that even though you may NOW be entering the "marriage years" you might NOT have been earlier. I'm 24, FI and I started dating when I was 19. Personally I wanted to wait until I was out of college and working a career job before we got married, and I think sometimes its hard for people outside of the relationship to really understand where your relationship is "at".

Just continue to shrug it off as best you can, and perhaps gently remind them that you're on your own timeline. Though I think you've the right idea, they are just excited for you!

    Again welcome!

Edit: Ahh DanieKA beat me to the wine question!

I love mashed redskin potatoes with butter, but I also like potato skins with cheese, bacon, and sour cream.<div>
</div><div>I answered the Harry Potter question just a few seconds ago. :)</div><div>
</div><div>I had two wonderful fur babies until a couple of years ago. Gomez, my 12-year old kitty, had to be put to sleep. It was the most heartbreaking thing I've ever had to go through.</div><div>
</div><div>Then, a few weeks later, his sister Morticia got out while my friend was watching her (I was on a trip). We weren't able to find her, even though we posted signs and checked the shelters every single day for three months. Morticia was younger than Gomez; she was five years old. I keep hoping someone took her in. I was a mess for a long time, worrying about if she got hit or starved or something. I still worry sometimes.</div><div>
</div><div>So, 2010 was a rough year. My boyfriend LOVES animals, so we're probably going to get a couple of kitties after we move into our new place. I finally feel ready to be a fur-mommy (?) again, but we don't want to stress the kitties out by moving them into this place and then moving just a couple months later. I'm pretty excited because I miss having kitties around. I love laying on my bed with a book and a cat (or two). :)</div>

I like you more with every post! I'll admit that I have read the series more than once though, they are a pretty easy mindless read so I'll pick it up if it's lying around.

I'm sorry about your kitties :( I used to have a cat but she got out on a camping trip and even though we looked everywhere we ended up having to leave with out her. I cried for days, I still get a little teary-eyed talking about it.

  • I read Uglies, too, but I didn't even know about Extras. I stopped after Specials. I was a little annoyed that it became a love triangle for a while, but there were things about the series that really impressed me otherwise. A lot of good metaphors and satire. Have you read Delirium by Lauren Oliver? I'm a sucker for a YA series.

LilTexas - I've already covered most of your questions (I love that everyone asked about Harry Potter and wine... ha!)

How did you meet your BF?   We both play WoW. My ex-bf got me the game for my birthday in Jan 2009. I was miserable and trying to get over him, so I created an account and started playing. I joined a guild with some really nice people. My BF and I started chatting sometime around March 2009. It was a great friendship because neither of us wanted to date anyone. Plus, he was in NM, and I was in MI, so it was perfectly safe.

We started dating ten months later (Jan 2010), and then he moved here in June 2011. ;)

How old are you?  I just turned 35, and my boyfriend is 37.

Do you cook?  I love cooking and baking. I do more baking, honestly, but I'm learning to cook more and more things. My best friend bought me a crock pot for my birthday, something I've always wanted, so I've been researching healthy crock pot recipes. I'd love to be able to make a bunch of food on Sunday and freeze it. We're horrible about getting take-out during the week because we don't feel like cooking. Having frozen meals ready to go would be awesome.

No, I'll have to check it out. I love YA series too. :) I was going to head back to the bookstore tomorrow since I forgot to get a Jennifer Weiner book I've been meaning to read. Maybe I'll pick that up too. It's supposed to be rainy all weekend, so I'm looking forward to some serious reading time. I love reading while it's raining outside.

I graduated with a BA in English. I've had enough grown-up books to last me a lifetime. ;) Not that I didn't love the stuff I read; it was just so nice to get into YA after five years of literary criticism. It was like eating Lucky Charms for dinner. I was finally reading for the sake of enjoyment.<div>
</div><div>I've always been into YA, though. One of my favorite books when I was 13 (and even today) is "The Changeover" by Margaret Mahy.</div><div>
</div><div>I also like Charlaine Harris (she has a few series besides the Sookie Stackhouse series), Jim Butcher, and Terry Pratchett. They're sort-of grown-up versions of the YA supernatural stuff.</div>

It's a series of (currently) five books: A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows and A Dance for Dragons. The first book has already been made into a series on HBO. I started reading it after watching the series at my boyfriend's insistence. I have not been disappointed. Granted, I'm only like 300 pages into the first one, but I like what I've read.

AMTRAK IS THE BEST. I travel by train whenever I can. I've been across country three times and up through the Northeast Corridor a lot. I can't think of a better way to travel than by train. Coworkers think I'm crazy because they say that I need to spend my vacation at the actual destination, but I explain to them that it's about the journey, not just the destination. My patients seem to understand, but alas my coworkers don't have this appreciation. Sucks for them.

</div><div>I love the train so much. We always take the Southwest Chief from Chicago to Albuquerque since that's where my BF is from. When we left for Christmas last year, we had maybe fifteen people in the entire car. It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Ah-mazing. I spent two days in complete and total silence with gorgeous scenery passing by and the rhythmic sound of the tracks underneath. I spent the entire time reading and taking pictures. Anyone who thinks it's a waste of vacation time is a fool.</div><div>
</div><div>We'd love to take the California Zephyr and Empire Builder one of these days. Also, we've never been to NYC, so I've been eyeing a few options. Oh, and New Orleans, the Northeast, the Auto Train... I pretty much want to see every inch of the Amtrak system. :)

I've taken the Empire Builder three times, Coast Starlight once, Southwest Chief once, City of New Orleans four times, Crescent once (twice in a little while!!), Ethan Allen Express twice and the Empire Service more times than I can remember. We're also going to do more of the regionals while we're up there -- we're leaving from Birmingham and going to Philly then taking whatever regional to NYC the next day, then probably the the Adirondack or Empire Service to Albany, drive around Vermont to hit all of my old haunts, then back to NYC to catch the Crescent again. It's going to be amazing.

I'm considering taking the Zephyr out to visit my grandma later this year. We don't want to leave a car in Memphis because for the love of god no, but we'll find a way to get to Chicago then go to Fullerton and take the Coast Starlight down to see her in Newport Beach. It will be so awesome.

    AUGH I LOVE TRAINS.
