Shiznit... I'd NEVER want to wear that!  I'd be so frightened of someone stealing it.  It's MASSIVE.  And thus I find that it looks costume-y (probably because for 99% of the population, the only way they could afford a stone that big is a CZ).

I wonder how much the taxes cost?  Between the ring and the trip to Chicago, that's gotta be an impressive sum.  You do have to pay for the taxes on contests like this if you win, yes?

Geez! That can't be a practical thing to wear on a daily basis. I would be sad not to be able to wear my e-ring everyday.

Oh and I was reading through the terms of the grand prize and the prize is an estimated $322,000 and all taxes are to be covered by the winners.

Cate, I bet 99.9% of people would assume it was a CZ anyway.

And the taxes on that "prize" would bankrupt me!

<div>It makes me wonder if the OP has thought about that. I mean, her one post definitely made it sound like they were a couple who had fallen on hard times and not yet come out of it.</div><div>
</div><div>ETA: Buying an engagement ring flat out would be cheaper than winning this one.</div>

I'd be afraid to walk down the street at night wearing that thing, paranoid someone would want to stab me for it or something.

I mean, if I won, I'd take it and pay the taxes.

Then I'd sell that ring to make my $30k back and use the profit to pay for a vacation (future honeymoon perhaps?).  Cuz you better believe taxes are going to be around 10%.

Ok...I'm sorry, but contests like these annoy me to no end.

My FI and I work hard. He works two full time jobs, I work two full time and run my own part-time business. We're both graduate students. We both have full-time lab schedules, coursework and masters thesis/dissertations to write. No one handed us a 22-carat diamond or a $100K wedding just because we happen to be nice people.

We wanted to get engaged - we got engaged. We purchased a piece of jewelry to symbolize that engagement that was within our financial means. We putting together a wedding that lands within our financial means.

Out of curiosity, if you really don't care about getting married/engaged, then why are you entering contests to win engagement rings?

I was wondering the same thing. ANDPLUSALSO- If you didn't care about winning, why go to the trouble of signing up for a TK account and then ask a bunch of random strangers to vote for you too?

I would't wear it. I would sell it and use the money I earned to pay off my student loans. We could use the residual to buy a DECENT ring. I want a classy engagement ring, not one that everyone assumes I got off a costume jewelry rack at Walmart.

Of course... if I won the ring.... I WOULD be happy because it would pay off my loans. xD

I think stuff like that is treated as ordinary income, so it would be taxed at 33% (or possibly 35% depending on the winner's regular income) according to the IRS.

That's over $106K in tax (33% x $322k). If you could actually sell it for $322K, then you'd come out ahead quite nicely.

A big ring does not equal love.

Get what you can afford and love the man it's from and what it symbolizes
