Open Letter Wednesday

Re: Open Letter Wednesday

  • I took ASL before going to Ghana the second time because they use ASL as the sign language of choice in Ghana, and some of the kids where I worked could only communicate via ASL despite being hearing. I took Ewe (local language) lessons when I was there as well.

I took four years of French in high school and a year in college. Japanese was my major for three years of college and I also took a year of tutoring in high school. Latin was the required language in 8th grade at my middle school, so I got a year of that as well. I spent a summer semester in Berlin for German and I really wish I still spoke it well. I also dabbled in Russian, but all I remember from that is Cyrillic. I guess that's worth something?

    LANGUAGEEEEE.

I love languages.  I took ASL for a few years in grade school.  I also took German in HS and College and grew up around Danish (Danish granmother raised me).  My sister is married into a Mexican family so Spanish is always flying around.  Now I have SO (who is Indian) and Hindi is being spoken non-stop (still need to learn that...just know some simple words now).

Oh, and I used to sing Opera so I know a bunch of worthless phrases in Italian and French like "The white moon gleams in the woods" and (totally great for the crazies who start wedding planning before getting engaged) "Oh my dear papa, I love him, he is handsome, handsome. I want to go to Porta Rossa To buy the ring. Yes, yes, I want to go there! And if my love were in vain, I would go to the Ponte Vecchio and throw myself in the Arno!".  Tongue out

My mom made me sing that all the time. I had other songs I wanted to sing, but nooo, O mio babbino caro had to be the one. I prefer singing things like Voi che sapete, Dido's Lament and Ah! Non credea mirarti, tyvm mother.

Yeah! Another Opera lover.  I LOVED Voi Che Sapete...one of my favorites to sing.  I hated singing French though...I am really bad at speaking French.  One competition I went to I had to sing an Italian, English and one other foreign language song one after the other.  I wanted to do a German song for the third song but my vocal professor chose French for me.  One of the judges wrote "lovely voice, bright and full tone...don't sing French ever again"...I laughed so hard at that and showed it to my vocal teacher so he would never give me a French song again.
  • I majored in music, so I had to sing in many languages, too.

The extent of my German is "Ach ich fuhl's es ist verschwunden." I actually managed all that from memory except how to spell verschwunden.
