Looking for Brutal Honesty

Our wedding is still 9 months out, so there's no hurry or anything, I just get bored at work and like these forums.
My FI and I are having our ceremony in a movie theater, and the owner is being amazingly kind and teaching us how to use all the equipment in the space. He has a digital projector that he said we could use, so we were thinking of making a short video of the wedding party introducing themselves, and a general summary of how the ceremony will go. A video program, basically. So far everyone is enthusiastic about this idea, but they aren't the type of people to rock the boat or complain about anything. What would you, as a guest, think of a video program playing while people are being seated and waiting for the ceremony to begin? If it's a "no", I'm all for having "Perpetuum Mobile" by the Penguin Cafe Orchestra playing quietly. Thanks in advance!

Re: Looking for Brutal Honesty

  • i think it would be cute since its in a movie theater.

  • I'm with Stage in that I don't care who the wedding party is. And I think she's right that it could be awkward as people come in. If it were me, I'd be thinking, "Oh!  Am I interrupting? What's happening?" The trivia sounds really cute. I normally wouldn't be a fan of any type of game like that at weddings, but b/c it is in the theater and would be like they do before movies, I think it's very original and I would remember it and tell other people about the cool thing your wedding had.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • I'm not a fan of the video idea -- I don't care to watch amateurs perform, it can be very painful.  But I like Stage's idea of the slide show.
  • I like Stage's idea.

In addition to avoiding awkwardness for people entering, you would avoid putting anyone in the spotlight. You said the WP may be saying they are fine with it only because they don't want to tell you no. Since the only two people you can be certain would be comfortable are you and your FI, you should be the only ones involved.

Would the theatre be dark when your guests enter? That might stifle conversations and greetings among guests. On the other hand, it would solve the 'please turn off cell phone' dilemma.
  • I dislike any and all videos and other presentations at weddings if I have to pay attention and there's a start and ending and information is presented.  Generally, I only know the bride or groom and I know in theory it means "oh, meet my friends or family" but  I always tune out.  And no one is as good an editor/writer as they think they are and these things end up too long or awkward.  Just having a slide show of photos isn't too bad if it's of the couple and your families.  My 2 cents.
  • I would just do a slide show of trivia and maybe photos of you two.  Like, a slide with a question, then a photo, and then the answer.  Like they do with movie trivia before previews start.  I would just make it repeat after 15 minutes or so.

I think the video of the wedding party is a bad idea.  No one cares who they are, and honestly, it will look wayyyy to "look at meeeeeeeeeeeee".  The wedding party shouldn't be the center of attention.
  • Thank you all for taking the time to respond, and thanks so much for the alternate idea! I love it because yeah, you guys are right...the only people who would really care about a video of the WP would be the WP, and we won't exactly be around to watch it anyway! I love the factoid/picture/slideshow idea....it's cute and simple and that way we can have the music playing anyway! Thanks again!!!

  • I like the slideshow idea.  A video has potential for being really cute (if done movie-trailer style, for example, and if you know someone who is REALLY REALLY good at video editing)....but it has a lot of potential to fall flat -- and for that reason I think I would avoid it.  But the slideshow would be easy, you could keep the lights up wihle it's running, and people could ignore it if they aren't interested, and you can have your music running.

  • I agree that if done right it could go great, but that's a HUGE if.  If you really want to do something, the trivia/picture would be the way to go.

You can absolutely play a video, but play it before the ceremony. Instead of featuring your bridal party, play a video of you and your husband, but keep it around 3 mins. My husband and I got married in a movie theater, and we definately used their equipment to make our ceremony unique. Also, we hired a day of coordinator to have our ceremony go according to plan.

Good luck! And, your guests will love your venue. <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif" border="0" alt="Smile" title="Smile" />

Thanks! That's so cool that you got married in a theater too! Ours will be the first wedding to take place in our town's theater, and I'm <u>so</u> excited.
  • I'm not a fan of videos and slideshows at rite of passage events.  I've seen them used before at bar/bat mitzvahs, and they took too long-the guests got restless.
  • As a guest, I'd think it was somewhat strange ...

I thought I was the only one... a movie theatre wedding is very odd.
