Julie & Julia (spoilers)

Just watched this movie on Netflix.  It wasn't an award winner by any means, but that's not what I was in the mood for.  As a movie, I liked it.  But there was one problem I had.

It never said why Julia didn't like Julie's blog! It just showed Julie being distraught by it, but never answered the question of why.  So I went to google.

In the movie, Julie is a total sympathetic character, very cute, somewhat humble.  Apparently, in reality, she mostly blogged about how she didn't have the energy to do the recipes the whole way through and talked about getting drunk a lot, and (real life) Julia found it disrespectful and thought that she wasn't taking it seriously.

I agree with Julia.  She doesn't take it seriously. And it's kind of a let down.  Disappointing.

I still liked the movie, but I wish it wasn't based on a true story and I wish I hadn't googled it.

I was bored one day and watched some of it on Netfix. I was bored and stopped watching before I got halfway through the movie.

Sorry if this doesn't make sense, I've been drinking...

I wasn't thrilled with it either. It was okay but I've never felt the urge to watch it again. I googled it too after watching it and was very disappointed by the truth as well.

I read both books that the movie was based on.  The one written by Julie and then one that Julia collaberated on about living in France and wrting the cook book.

I loved both books and the movie.  Not because they were the best thing ever (they aren't).  But I read/watched at a time in my life when I was really lost professionally and it was nice to read about someone (julie) who was lost and found something to define her.

As for Julia I find it inspirational that she didn't become the Julia Child we all know untill she was like 40.  She was about 35 when she married Paul and couldn't cook yet.

I saw it in theaters and then even made a point to go see the kitchen in the Smithsonian when I went to DC a few weeks later. I really don't like the real life Julie Powell. She has a second book out now, Cleaving, where she talks about cheating on her husband and how it made their marriage stronger. I also detest Amy Adams's haircut in the movie.

I only watch that movie for one reason and one reason only: Meryl Streep. She got an Oscar nom for this performance, and rightfully so. Julia Child is such a beloved public figure and she played the character with such heart and passion. I saw it first on Starz, then I ended up owning the DVD (got it at a 5 for $20 sale @ Blockbuster) and when I watch it, I actually skip over Amy Adams' parts. Damn, is Julie Powell a boring character.

Narwhal, I too googled the reason why Julia doesn't approve of Julie's blog, and I agree with Julia too!

I will admit that I lvoe that movie, but it is more for Julia Child/Meryl Streep. I find Julie annoying and when I found out that she cheated on her husband in real life she lost what little respect I had for her.

I definitely finished that movie (also free on Netflix - woot!) very disappointed.  I didn't know that's the real reason Julia didn't like the blog, but I never really liked the character of Julie.  I thought she was awful to her boyfriend, self-involved, and somewhat lazy and over emotional.  Turns out, the actress played the character very well!

I can't believe there's a book out there talking about how cheating can make you closer.  Ugh!  What trash!
