Best shows on TV

FI and I recently got cable again. So, I've been looking for good shows. We're watching syfy's Being Human and loving it. I also like the Walking Dead. I found out today that I have a BBC channel. Doctor Who was on, but I didn't watch it because I wouldn't know what was going on. Should I try to find the first season (how many are there?) of Doctor Who? Any other shows that you'd recommend?

Re: Best shows on TV

  • Oh Dr. Who goes waaaay back.  I think their on the 11th doctor.  But it is a great show.  I tried watching once and I got all kinds of lost.  I think Bside and Hellotarra would be good people to talk to about that show.  I also like Mad Men, Castle, Fringe, Walking Dead is Awesome, TruBlood.
  • When we did have cable I always watched TLC and E!, sometimes USA. Now we don't have it and I miss it.

  • I recently got attached with Dresden Files. I don't think you can get them on cable anymore, but definitely on Netflix! There's also a whole bunch of books.

I happen to be a Grey's Anatomy, Big Bang Theory kind of girl. Sometimes I'll watch Law and Order, but the comedies are definitely much more my style.
  • Good shows- Once Upon A Time, Dexter, True Blood, Bones, Psych (amazing), I've also heard that Homeland is really good, and my roommate is hooked on Sons of Anarchy

<div>I found that I couldn't follow Once Upon a Time too easily. Seems like one of those shows that you have to keep up on every single episode. </div>
  • Off the top of my head:

    American Horror Story
    Revenge
    Walking Dead
    Jersey Shore (don't judge me)
    Pretty Little Liars
    Chopped
    Top Chef
    Once Upon A Time
    Gossip Girl

    If you have Showtime:
    Dexter
    Weeds
    Shameless
    Homeland
    The Big C

  • Big Bang Theory. You won't regret it.
"Stuart was scared, but he loved Margalo, Mommy. And there is nothing bigger than love." -The Bean
"His farts smell like Satan's asshole mixed with a skunk's vagina. But it's okay, because I love him." -CSousa

  • I watch:
    New Girl
    Whitney
    Raising Hope
    Parenthood (LOVE)
    The Office
    The Big Bang Theory

    I will watch:
    American Idol
    Mad Men

I guess I don't watch a lot of cable channel shows... interesting. I did just find that OWN is now in HD and that'll probably be my go-to channel when I have the remote.

Books are waaaay better than the show.  Too bad the show only last a season.  You can still watch it on Hulu.  But if you get a chance the Dresden files as a series of books are awesome.  I'm waiting to see what the next book brings.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Best shows on TV : Yeah Dr Who!! Okay so most of the episodes are enjoyable as one-offs, but through each season there's clues in each episode leading to a big reveal at the end of the story arch.

That sounds really interesting. I'll definitely have to try to get into it.

I've heard Sons of Anarachy is awesome too. I have a girl crush on Katey Sagal. I loved Married with Children and Futurama.

True statement. We don't have cable but we recently worked through all of the Psych episodes on Netflix. It's one of the only TV shows that actually makes me laugh out loud.

  • Yes- Once Upon a Time is definitely a show you have to watch from episode 1 and watch every episode. It's from the people who did Lost, so it's good, but something you have to stay up on.

I'm looking forward to that show Alcatraz as well!

And yes- Psych is the funniest show. Shawn and Gus are my tv lovers!

<div>I got to watch a sneak peek of the premiere episode of this on the plane to Miami & it was REALLY good. It's definitely going on my DVR list!! </div>

  • I watch:
    How I Met Your Mother
New Girl (I laugh out loud more at this show than anything else on TV)
    2 Broke Girls
    Grey's (I can't quit it)
    Teen Mom 2 (judge away)
    Pretty Little Liars
The Lying Game (I watched the whole marathon on New Years Day & loved it)
    Chopped
    Big Bang Theory

I'm contemplating getting HBO for True Blood this season, because I need my Stabler... uh, Christopher Meroni fix. I now only really watch reruns of SVU because it's just not the same without him.

<div>Bri, I watch that too! I have a minor (ok major) ABC Family TV show obsession lately as in I watch just about all of them (Pretty Little Liars, The Lying Game, Make it or Break It, Switched at Birth).  I was embarrassed to admit the rest of them though <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-embarassed.gif" border="0" alt="Embarassed" title="Embarassed" />.  In my mind I'm still a 17 year old girl bahahaha</div>

Most of the shows I watch require keeping up to get most of it. But I highly recommend How I Met Your Mother if you can start it from the beginning (it's on Netflix now!). I also blew through the Vampire Diaries on Netflix over break to catch up. It's not the greatest show in the world, but I'm hooked (Ian Sommerhalder's presence helps with that!). Any HGTV shows or Food Network shows are great time wasters!

Also: I love Being Human! I haven't watched the British version, just the one on SyFy. I can't wait for it to come back.

Hahaha I LOVE all those shows on ABC Family. I can't help it!! I kind of heart that DJ Tanner is a mom on Make it or Break it, and I wish my life was half as exciting as the teenagers on Pretty Little Liars & The Lying Game.

    Holmes Inspection

    Life is good today.
  • I'm a total nerd and mostly watch documentary/reality-type shows.  I like Brad Meltzer's Decoded, Mysteries at the Museum, Destination Truth, etc.  Then I also like HGTV and Food Network shows too.

I do watch a few 'regular' shows (though most of them are comedies).  South Park, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Family Guy, Once Upon a Time (I watched the first episode, dvr'd the rest and just finally caught up), & Vampire Diaries (not very good, but something to watch)

Then of course, my favorite:  True Blood, but that's not on again until June.  I did just re-watch Season 1 - 3 though, Season 4 isn't out yet on dvd.
    Anniversary
  • My favorite show is Chuck, and it's on its last season and ends in a few weeks =(  I have every season on DVD though so I'm good =)

BF got me hooked on Breaking Bad, which is a close runner up for favorite show.

I really like American Pickers too. Which I find funny since my grandma also likes that show.

I hear Big Bang Theory is awesome, and I think once Chuck is over I'll have to start watching it.

  • Also- for anyone who wants to know, just PM me. (don't know if it's ok to post it in this thread or not?)  I have a website a ton of my friends and I use to watch shows- any show, whether it is on HBO or showtime or ABC, and it's a legal one too with nothing that gives you viruses. That's how I watch True Blood and Dexter the day they come out on HBO and Showtime

  • Mmmmmm Doctor Who...... Huh, what? Sorry, I was wrapped in a David Tennant/Matt Smith/John Barrowman/Arthur Darvill sammich for a minute... Doctor Who has been on and off the air since the 60's, it's the longest running science fiction show in Britain. Lyn is right, it's currently on the Eleventh Doctor (which will make more sense once you start watching). While you do not need to start at the VERY beginning, I would start with season 1 of the new reboot, which begins with the introduction of the Ninth Doctor. Seasons 1 through 5 can be found on Netflix, and season 7 doesn't start until the spring, so if you wanted to catch up, now would be a good time. Anyway...I also like the following shows: American Horror Story Glee New Girl How I Met Your Mother 2 Broke Girls Archer (one of the funniest "adult" cartoons I have ever seen!) Pawn Stars Storage Wars Auction Hunters Paranormal State Celebrity Ghost Stories Chopped Cupcake Wars Guy vs. Rachael Celebrity Cook Off Celebrity Apprentice Dexter True Blood ....I think that's it. Wow I sound like all I do is watch TV! LOL.
