[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Drives me crazy : That seems perfectly reasonable to me. I see no problem with checking up on things, that's good. I just don't feel totally comfortable with someone just saying "I can't fill this" and leaving it at that. But maybe that's a problem of the system, I don't know.

    This.

@Jen - I was just giving you a heads up, I didn't tell you what I was on and yes I do take pain medication, too. I am nowhere near a druggie; I just have two torn up shoulders which dislocate at the slightest wrong movement. I take strong pain meds regularly and I take other highly controlled medications as well. I don't care if my pharmacist calls (the ones I worked with always did if they thought something was weird). I just wouldn't like going in and having someone see my medication and look at me and go, "yeah I'm not filling this." Not everyone is a med-seeker.

The problem is that people don't think pharmacists are as educated as their general doctor, mostly because they're working in a grocery store or CVS/Walgreens pharmacy.  So they trust their doctors more than pharmacists.  It's when they both work together that the system works - the doctor is the first line of defense, the pharmacist is the safety net.

[QUOTE]They have this whole thing where pharmacists have the right to NOT distribute birth control pills or the morning after pill if their religion prevents it - but ONLY if there is another pharmacist there to give the meds. Pain meds are in their own market, Bren.  I don't think they can reject antibiotics or antipsychotics or anything.  But pain meds are their own issue.

A distinction between the different kinds of meds help. So does that right to refuse to distribute also count for pain meds? I'm not accusing anyone of going on a power trip, but it just sounds like a legal problem waiting to happen.

Just out of curiousity, does the US have free needle clinics? It's *kind of* on topic with the discussion here haha.

Pharmacists can refuse to give you plan B, as well. The lady I worked with was Greek Orthodox and believed life was created as soon as sperm entered the body. She refused to sell Plan B because it would be takling a life. So dumb. I think the refusals are in place for good reason but sometimes people do get on a power trip, at times. I've seen it personally.

I think they do have those needle clinics here - I've heard of them at least.

It is not so much the medication but which Dr it is coming from.It is not a Lawsuit waiting to happen because there are laws that are followed.Bottom Line is, Pharmacies are a small community, everyone knows everyone,we know all the seedy clinics, all the C2 happy doctors and these patients that we reject never come back because they know THEY can go to jail....

Nope it's completely legal here. It's against her personal beliefs and she has the right to refuse. Trust me this was an ENORMOUS problem when it came out and I worked there. Tech's couldn't sell it either because she was in charge.

Eh, with Plan B, I think if a person doesn't want to dispense it then there should be another one whose willing to like Cate said. Same thing with giving abortions.

Jen, it just finally clicked for me that you're a pharmacist. Having a pharmacist refuse to dispense seems okay to me, assuming they do have a protocol for checking up on it somehow, but I was thinking of just having a counter person do that. That would bother me.
