Obession with tv shows?

So I am noticing a trend , and this isn't against anyone it just sparked up and just got me curious. In the last 24 hours 90% of my friends updates on FB and various other messageboards have been about True Blood on HBO. Not sure if anyone here watches it , I don't. Last month it ewas everyone freaking out about Lost ending and so on.

Granted I have done my share of stalking tv shows in the past..just now I just don't have the time , nor desire. It almost seems like for some of these people and friends that this is the best most important thing ever..I dunno..maybe I'm just getting bitter at seeing every other update about some different flavor of the week show.

I've also had a long weekend and the last thing on my mind is worrying about what fictional characters are sleeping with who or whatever , lol. Nothing wrong with enjoying anything in life but I don't need a play by play every half an hour how incomplete your life was before this show.. /><

I loved Lost! It was a fantastic show. I have my guilty pleasure shows that I keep up with but I have never felt the need to update people about fictional characters on facebook. My friends do that too and its a little bit annoying really. But I like the escape from reality that an hour long T.V. show gives me. But I don't have T.V. so I watch online whenever I have the time to catch up. Lost was the only show I ever actually made time for in my schedule to watch on T.V.

These shows are marketed to us to purposely feed our obsession. We've reached this era where you don't have to watch tv to know about tv shows. They're on the sides of buses, huge billboards on teh side of the roads, ads on internet sites.... clothing stores, bookstores, signs at the mall...
Celebrities are everywhere and at night it's hard to avoid a television show where someone isn't plugging their own show on another show.

You can be watching one show and WHILE the show is going on, ads for other shows will pop up on the screen. The ads have movement in them, too, so your eyes are automatically drawn to it.
There was this one show I was watching in reruns... I think it was Angel or Buffy on FX or TNT and the pop-up ad on the tv actually made loud noise! TV GUIDE actually ran several mentions of their annoyance with this ad until it was finally pulled off the air. The ad was actually really loud and drowned out the show I was watching. And it would pop up several times during the shows.
That is how far stations are willing to go to get your attention.

And once they got your attention, they keep it.
With the ads themselves....
Who will she choose?
What will happen?
How will it all end?

They encourage you to choose Teams and wear their clothes...
Make sure you log online to discuss the show more. So even when the show isn't on, your mind is always on it. You can download ringtones so even when you aren't home you're mind is on it.

It all sounds more exciting than whether or not the oil spill will ever be cleaned up before the entire ocean is covered in dead fish.

And it makes me sad that some people are more interested in some fantasy reality than the one they have to live in the next 60+ years..I just don't get it.

What sparked this was a friend of mine saying how she cheated at work and was watching True Blood..seriously ? Your job is to be a caregiver for elderly , companionship , helping run errands , etc. NOT WATCH SOME STUPID SHOW THAT YOU CAN'T AFFORD AT YOUR OWN HOME. You can't even provide the basics for yourself but you will basically "steal" tv time from your client who is paying your bills. That is when it crosses the line in my opinon.

Enjoying tv on your own time , whether it be via cable or internet , dvd , whatever is all fine and well. It's when it takes over as an important part of your life as your job is the people I am referring to. Sure when I was 15 maybe I was that way..but I grew out of it.

I've never seen either of those shows. I only watch a couple shows and even those BF and I can DVR and catch up on weeks later together.

Tafft sounds like your friend is very immature, hopefully when she isn't "stealing" time to watch True Blood she is providing her clients with good care.

She has said some stupid things before and made me give her a side eye..but all this combined with other issues , so yeah. This is why I don't have many friends because I will tell them exactly how I feel about things and naturally they don't take to it well bleh.

I watch True Blood, but I had DVR'ed it and watched it after my kids had gone to bed. Which is what I will do every Sunday night, since I refuse to watch it while they are awake. I also watch the news in the mornings while on the treadmill/eating breakfast. I guess I just like to be able to escape reality for a little while.... That's also why I love to grab a good book and read before going to bed.

I don't think there is anything wrong with escaping with tv , movies , books , video games , etc , it just seems to some people I have known or been friends with , and especially recently , it is their "life" and it scares me. But usually there are much bigger underlying issues that they are having trouble dealing with so they turn to something more comforting , not really surprising but it can be detrimental in the wrong circumstances. Maybe I'm just changing as a person and no longer have things in common that I used to with some people..it could be me , lol.

I do know what you mean, though. I used to have a friend who was so caught up in LOST that if you named an event, she could tell you what season and episode it happened in. To me, that was crazy. She watched them all repeatedly and was proud of it. I looked at it as spending too much time watching a show and not enough time with her kids.

My passion to watch glee online is getting more and more rich as I came closer to this show. Puck is one of the rocking character of the show.. Till now i had not missed even a single episode of glee. Rocky horror was enough good i like the way then describe the storyline of subject which was earlier being presented in late 1976 in orignal Rocky horror show..

I watch my TV shows either On Demand or online. If they're not available either of those methods, it's not happening.

There are shows I like and will follow, but I'm not so into them that I'd update Facebook about it. Although Burn Notice comes close... I have a slightly unhealthy crush on the main character (not the actor, the character).

That said, I don't see it as being any worse of a way to entertain yourself and relax than say, playing video games or computer games or reading trashy romance novels. To each their own!

Hetshup, you know the winners from last season? The Pious brothers? They're from my hometown. I kissed Dan (the older one) at a bar mitzvah once. I'm not a big fan of either of them - the younger one picked on my brother at cub scouts once upon a time.

I love TV, and, while I let it control my life in any way, my love of Dancing with The Stars has made it to my facebook status a time or two.

I'm not going to be shooting my TV over upsetting results anytime soon, though...
