Interesting Career Choices

FI and I have this friend who is studying to be a mortician and eventually wants to open his own funeral home. Oddly enough, he gets ragged on a lot and there are quite a few jokes cracked at his expense (especially about his love life, as you can imagine). Personally, I think it's a pretty cool career choice, one that no one really thinks about. I mean, it takes an interesting kind of person to wake up one day and decide he wants to perform autopsies. Also, FI's uncle is a professional sand sculptor. It's something he just kind of fell into as a hobby and now he's on a Travel Channel show. I've been wondering - do you or anyone else you know have a career where people just kind of go, "Huh....wow"? Like how becunning wants to be a Latin teacher. How many people do you know who study Latin?? I think that is just so interesting. So....discuss?!

Re: Interesting Career Choices

  • A family friend writes about fishing. He travels all over to fish and then write about it. I think it's pretty cool/unique.

My dad is a geo-physicist. He looks for stuff under the ground. He was hired by treasure hunters once.

My mom is an audiologist which I only think is weird because I really don't like ears. I really really don't like it when people to touch my ears.

  • I used to looooooove Six Feet Under. Loved it. I totally agree with what you said about that career, bsidebella. I could never do any of it, not for a minute, but I'm thankful that there are folks that choose it.

  • Oh wow I could never!!

When my Poppop was in his 30's he was a grave-digger. Not exactly a career, more of a random job to help bring home the bacon for the time being but still weird (and scary).

lol, Latin was our language requirement in middle school.

  • I spoke to someone yesterday who made 1.2 million dollars in 14 months selling a questionable, yet legal substance when she/he was working abroad. She/he is now very much involved in the legalized marijuana business here in Colorado- and is VERY business minded. She/he wants to be a lobbyist someday- and I think they would be a darn good one.

She/he has big plans, probably even to start "grading" pot- like they do meat, which I think would be a VERY good idea.

And it's ridiculous how blatant the pot shops are here in Colorado. It was "legal" in California too...but you never knew where the dispensaries were. Here...there are green plus signs all over the darn place!

  • In my early 20s I seriously thought about changing my career path to cameraman (camera person, whatever). One day, i was just like "how does one become a camera operator?" You can work on movies and music videos or for the news or a talk show. you get the same breaks as the big stars do because if your talk show is on hiatus, so are you. I don't know what I was thinking, but I still think it's a pretty cool job.

About the mortician, I think it's a really solid career choice. It's a profession we'll always need. Not many people want to do it because of the perception, whatever that is, so I assume that means you can break in relatively easily. And you are handling something very precious (a deceased loved one) so I'm also assuming you can charge up the wazoo!!! When your friend is rich and retired at 50, we'll see who's laughing!
  • My dad was a balloon designer up until a few years ago. He has some patents on super cool balloon designs. I think that is an awesome job. He would always bring home random balloons for us.

Oh- and I'm not sure if it's interesting....but it IS SUPER COOL. My friend from high school and member of our bridal party works at Sony doing all the music for their videogames, such as un-charted.

He goes all of the world recording orchestras and bands for the games. He's recorded a number of time at Skywalker Ranch.

  • I'm in cosmetology school. I haven't made a final decision yet, but if I can't find a salon to work in, I'm going to be a funeral home stylist. FI isn't thrilled about it though, so it will probably be a last resort.

I actually have a friend that is a video game tester for EA. Seriously, the guy is at work til 4am testing and trying to break the games. I never thought that would be a real job.

As for the mortician, I agree it's not a "normal" career choice, and knowing my sarcastic personality I would probably crack on him a bit, but I think it's actually a great career all the way around if you can handle it. For me, I'm a little too squeamish to be able to work on dead bodies. No thank you. But like PP said, it's a job that we will always need, so there's job security!

  • A friend of mine from college is going to school to be a mortician. She has some really funny status updates on Facebook about it.

I can't really think of anyone else with weird jobs. Cool/neat jobs, yeah, but nothing that I would consider weird.

Haha, there is one right across the street from my apartment here in CA. It was a hopping place in April!
