My Very First Garden!! (YAY!!)

Check out what I just ordered from Breck's. It was so darn hard not to order the entire freaking catalog.

What are your favorite bulbs?

The Dutch Treat Collection
(100 bulbs for $34.99!!)

The ideal starter collection for your garden—or a friend’s. Eight outstanding varieties of fresh, prime-quality Dutch bulbs fully guaranteed to grow and bloom. Exciting blooms start peeking through in early spring and keep coming until summer is in sight. Shipped in a distinctive gift box with complete planting instructions.

In this collection I will receive:

10 King Edward Tulips 8 Giant Daffodils for Naturalizing (Deer Resistant) 20 Alpine Rosy Bells (Deer Resistant) 12 Beauty Dutch Iris Mixture (Deer Resistant) 20 Blue Grape Hyacinths (Deer Resistant) 10 Early Stardrift (Deer Resistant) 10 Economy Tulip Mixture
10 Giant Crocus Mixture (Deer Resistant)
All Seasons Lily Mixture
(I love lillies!)

From early until late summer your garden will positively glow with this colourful All Season Lily Mixture of Asiatic, Trumpet, Tiger and Oriental lily varieties. Asiatic lilies start the show in early summer, with 4-5" flowers. Trumpet lilies are named for their long trumpet- shaped blooms arranged on strong, 4-5' stems. By midsummer, Tiger lilies brandish their 4" blooms of wide, recurved petals with black dots. Oriental lilies provide the grand finale to the lily season with their intoxicating fragrance and dazzling large blooms, making them the supermodels of the lily world.

Kaleidoscope Tulip Mixture
(Because at the end of the order they upsold me by saying, "So- we're running a deal on this tulpis for $10.39. Are you interested? 'Why, sure, flower man!)

Breck’s is pleased to offer this very special mixture that will enable you to create large plantings of colourful Dutch tulips at a very low cost. This mixture, packed right in the heart of Holland’s bulb-growing area and rushed to America, includes prize varieties not available in sufficient supply to offer individually. Top-quality bulbs belong in every cutting garden. Yield bountiful blooms for bright bouquets in dazzling solids and multicolours to fill your home or to share with friends.

Ice Stick Tulip
(This was Andrew's pick- pretty neat, right?)

Named by the grower who was reminded of ice cream on a stick! One of the earliest-blooming tulips of all, Ice Stick may even bloom when snow is still on the ground. And what a colour show! Blue-green buds slowly blush pink. Gradually, the green becomes white highlighted with pink and blue. Makes a dramatic statement with crocuses in borders or naturalized areas.

[QUOTE]That is pretty! You better PIP next year when they're blooming! Dumb question: do you plant bulbs in the fall before the ground freezes? Or do you plant them in the early spring as soon as the ground thaws? I'm learning how to plant a veggie garden for next year, but I don't know anything about flowers.

Both- there are bulbs you plant in the fall- and then bulbs you plant in the spring.

A lot of the early blooming spring flowers go in during the fall....crocus, daffodils, ect.

Tell me all you know on vegetable gardening. LOL.

I just bought this book today:
