What would you do?

I was just thinking of hypothetical situations and was wondering how everyone would react in each one. I know it's hard to predict how we would react in certain situations, but how do you think you would honestly react?

What would you do if:

*you saw someone's pet being attacked by another animal? Would you try to break it up?

* you were in a store that was being robbed? Would you try to stop them?

* you were a bartender and a very pregnant lady came up asking for hard liquor, obviously to get drunk? Would you serve her?

* you worked for a school and suspected a child was being abused? Would you say something?

*you hear someone getting sick in the bathroom? Do you ask if they need help?

*someone is in an accident? Are you one of the first to respond?

*there's trash on the ground next to a trash can? Do you pick it up?

*someone is rushing to get inside behind you, but to hold the door would make you wait a while? Do you stand there and wait for them? Do you hold the door on elevators?

If anyone has any more questions, feel free to add them.

Re: What would you do?

• *you saw someone's pet being attacked by another animal? Would you try to break it up?

Depends. If I'm in my neighborhood I'll definitely call the neighbor and tell. Would I get in the middle of a dog fight? I don't think so. But I would do more than just sit there and watch. I'd alert the owners/animal control.

* you were in a store that was being robbed? Would you try to stop them?

No. I do what they say and pray they take what they want and leave. Of course it sort of depends on how many other people are in the store, does the guy have a gun or a knife or bat, etc. But generally I'm not looking to get shot AND robbed. I'll take straight robbed in that situation.

* you were a bartender and a very pregnant lady came up asking for hard liquor, obviously to get drunk? Would you serve her?

Nope. If it's a glass of wine, I don't really care. But as a bartender I have the right to refuse service to anyone and I'm not serving you liquor.

* you worked for a school and suspected a child was being abused? Would you say something?

Legally, you have a duty to report that type of stuff. There's no would you or wouldn't you about it. Well, let me say I dont know about the lunch ladies, or the janitor, but I'm pretty certain teachers/counselors/principals/administrators, etc have a legal duty to report.

*you hear someone getting sick in the bathroom? Do you ask if they need help?

Sure.

*someone is in an accident? Are you one of the first to respond?

No. I don't go over and disturb the accident, but I definitely call the police and stay to make sure they arrive and if they need a statement. That sounds somewhat cut off, but I'm terrified of trying to be a hero and moving and person and causing spinal chord damage or something. I help, but from afar.

*there's trash on the ground next to a trash can? Do you pick it up?

Probably not. Depends on what it is. I don't want to touch someone gross snotty paper towel or chewed up food. An empty water bottle, maybe.

*someone is rushing to get inside behind you, but to hold the door would make you wait a while? Do you stand there and wait for them? Do you hold the door on elevators?

If they're rushing it's probably not gonna take them that long. I tend to always hold doors/elevators. I hate being late, so I'm generally always early to things and can spare the time to hold doors.
• I love these types of things. Have you seen that show? "What Would You Do?" I think It's on ABC - very interesting!! I like to think that I'd always jump in and save the day, but honestly, I can be a chicken at times.

*you saw someone's pet being attacked by another animal? Would you try to break it up? I think I would try, so long as it isn't some giant rabid pitbull that could eat me as well. Go for a distraction maybe? Try to find some food for angry animal?

* you were in a store that was being robbed? Would you try to stop them? No. The store's money is worth far less than my life or someone else's. I worked retail - we were always told to just hand over the whole drawer of money in the case that someone was trying to rob us.

* you were a bartender and a very pregnant lady came up asking for hard liquor, obviously to get drunk? Would you serve her? I'd pretend to give her hard liquor, but give her soda/juice/something else instead. Maybe that'll buy enough time to have one of her friends stop her?

* you worked for a school and suspected a child was being abused? Would you say something? I do work for a school, and yes I'd definitely say something. I'd lose my job if I didn't, and more importantly, a child's life is at stake there.

*you hear someone getting sick in the bathroom? Do you ask if they need help? Yes. Definitely.

*someone is in an accident? Are you one of the first to respond? If I'm there first, yes. I witnessed a bad car accident in high school and had to call 911. I couldn't do much, but I sat with the driver for a while until EMS got there. Terrifying. She was okay though.

*there's trash on the ground next to a trash can? Do you pick it up? Depends on what it is - piece of paper? Okay. Used tissue? Sorry.

*someone is rushing to get inside behind you, but to hold the door would make you wait a while? Do you stand there and wait for them? Do you hold the door on elevators? Depends on how much of a rush I'm in. Embarassed to admit this, but if I was really in a hurry, I might pretend to not see them. :-\

• *you saw someone's pet being attacked by another animal? Would you try to break it up?
Probably not. I'm picturing 2 dogs in a fight & I'm generally scared of dogs so I would probably do nothing but hide.

* you were in a store that was being robbed? Would you try to stop them?
I did once! I worked at Wet Seal in high school & I was shopping on my day off & watched 2 girls shove clothes into a bag in the corner. I told my manager & she made them leave. Then I watched them go into H&M so I followed them & alerted the manager there also. I was scared haha

* you were a bartender and a very pregnant lady came up asking for hard liquor, obviously to get drunk? Would you serve her?
I don't think so.

* you worked for a school and suspected a child was being abused? Would you say something?
Yes, I would alert the police definitely.

*you hear someone getting sick in the bathroom? Do you ask if they need help?
Yep, I'd ask if everything is ok & if they need anything.

*someone is in an accident? Are you one of the first to respond?
I would pull over & call the police.

*there's trash on the ground next to a trash can? Do you pick it up?
No. Other people's garbage grosses me out.

*someone is rushing to get inside behind you, but to hold the door would make you wait a while? Do you stand there and wait for them? Do you hold the door on elevators?
If I saw them running I would probably stand there & hold the door for them.

• *you saw someone's pet being attacked by another animal? Would you try to break it up?
If it was an animal I thought I could handle, I would probably step in. If not, I would probably call for help. I hate seeing animals get hurt.

* you were in a store that was being robbed? Would you try to stop them?
No. Stores carry insurance, and I wouldn't want to escalate the situation especially if weapons were involved. It it was just petty theft, I might tell a store manager what I saw.

* you were a bartender and a very pregnant lady came up asking for hard liquor, obviously to get drunk? Would you serve her?
Nope.

* you worked for a school and suspected a child was being abused? Would you say something?
Absolutely. I know an investigation can cause a lot of grief for families when it's not actually abuse, but I can live with that. I wouldn't be able to live with knowing I didn't help a child who really needed it.

*you hear someone getting sick in the bathroom? Do you ask if they need help?
I usually ask "are you ok?". Most people want to be left alone, but if they need help I figure they'll tell me then.

*someone is in an accident? Are you one of the first to respond?
Yes. I don't know why, but I remain eerily calm in intense situations. I have twice before been the 911 caller.

*there's trash on the ground next to a trash can? Do you pick it up?
Usually yes...although a lot of people have been leaving their dog poop bags by the dumpster lately and I refuse to touch those.

*someone is rushing to get inside behind you, but to hold the door would make you wait a while? Do you stand there and wait for them? Do you hold the door on elevators?
I generally hold the doors. If I'm really in a rush though, I might pretend to attempt to catch the door. Is that bad? I don't want to look mean, but I gotta go people! :(
• *you saw someone's pet being attacked by another animal? Would you try to break it up?
Depends on the types of animals, but yes. At the very least I would be on the phone with Animal Control.

* you were in a store that was being robbed? Would you try to stop them?
Hell no, there's no way I'd risk my life for a couple hundred bucks in the cash register.

* you were a bartender and a very pregnant lady came up asking for hard liquor, obviously to get drunk? Would you serve her?
Nope. Bartenders have the right to not serve to those they think shouldn't have alcohol, pregnancy is one of them. Of course, that leaves you in the awkward position of misjudging if someone is pregnant or not, so I'd be 100% sure before I refused them on those grounds.

* you worked for a school and suspected a child was being abused? Would you say something?
Absolutely. Even if they aren't, I'd at least want them to look into it. I believe school & hospitals have a legal responsibility to report suspected abuse anyways.

*you hear someone getting sick in the bathroom? Do you ask if they need help?
Depends where it is, if it's in a bar, I'd just assume they were drunk. If it was anywhere else, yeah, I'd probably check on them.

*someone is in an accident? Are you one of the first to respond?
I would definitely stop and make sure 911 is called (I've done this before). But unless the car is on fire or something or there is an obvious bleeding wound that needs pressure on it, I'm not touching them only because I have zero medical training and I certainly wouldn't want to make anything worse.

*there's trash on the ground next to a trash can? Do you pick it up?
Yeah, I've done that lots of times, actually.

*someone is rushing to get inside behind you, but to hold the door would make you wait a while? Do you stand there and wait for them? Do you hold the door on elevators?
If I'm not in a hurry also, sure. There's only been a few times where I've been in such a rush that I don't even bother to check if anyone is coming, most of the times, it's when I really, really have to pee or something. LOL.

• I have not seen the show on ABC.

*you saw someone's pet being attacked by another animal? Would you try to break it up? It would depend on the animals, but, in most cases, I tend to act without thinking, so I would probably try to stop it somehow.

* you were in a store that was being robbed? Would you try to stop them?
I don't think I would. I don't think losing my life is worth it.

* you were a bartender and a very pregnant lady came up asking for hard liquor, obviously to get drunk? Would you serve her?
I would not be able to, although a quick google search said the lady could sue if you refused to serve her. I'm not sure if that varies by state though.

* you worked for a school and suspected a child was being abused? Would you say something?
Wouldn't be able to not say something.

*you hear someone getting sick in the bathroom? Do you ask if they need help?
I've actually not asked someone if they need help. My college is a party school and it was fairly common to see people throwing up. I was also a lot more shy back then, so it was hard for me to talk to people. I do wish I had asked her, and would ask someone now.

*someone is in an accident? Are you one of the first to respond?
I'm probably going to be a help from afar person. I wouldn't want to make the situation worse, but if it's basic FIrst Aid, then I could help with that. I've done CPR classes too, but the thought of it terrifies me, lol.

*there's trash on the ground next to a trash can? Do you pick it up?
Little scraps of paper or wrappers, I'm ok with. Nothing that is covered with an unidentifiable substance though.

*someone is rushing to get inside behind you, but to hold the door would make you wait a while? Do you stand there and wait for them? Do you hold the door on elevators?
I have pretended to hold the door or not see someone before. We did this often in Spain because the elevator was so tiny. It was like just enough room for 4 people to squeeze in and they'd have to be touching. I was a big girl and my roommate was too, so that made it worse and the elevator was so tiny. We were also younger, so we would do the nervous giggle when someone was on with us. It was easier to just let them get the other elevator. I think elevator rides are the most uncomfortable thing ever though, so I take the stairs now, lol.

Very true, and my apologies. Wrote the response quickly, and did think about that afterward. It was just the first type of big dog I thought of off the top of my head, probably due to all the unfortunate negative portrayals there are out there... annoying that I've fallen for things like that. I do like pit bulls - a cousin has one that is as gentle as can be, as I'm sure most are.

Totally agree. I have a pit bull & she's probably the sweetest & best-behaved dog I've ever met. I had a black lab (a "safe, family dog") when I was younger & it attacked me. I don't hate all black labs becuase of that, it just made me very aware that stereotypes are crap :)

I just wanted to come in and drop some knowledge. I have been ServSafe certified through the restaraunts I've worked at, and TIPS certified to serve beer at Gilette stadium, and actually, you cannot refuse a person alcohol based on pregnancy. You can refuse based on many other things, most notably visible drunkenness, but not pregnancy. You also cannot serve someone a nonalcoholic beverage and pretend it's alcoholic. Liquor licenses can be revoked on both counts. I always thought it was insane that you couldn't refuse to serve based on pregnancy, so the one time that I had what looked to be a pregnant woman come in and order a drink, I told the manager I had seen her stumble on the way in so I did not think she should be served. He backed me up - problem solved!

Yeah, I read that the person can sue the establishment if you refuse to serve them due to pregnancy. I don't think I could do it though. I'd have to ask someone else to help her. I think that's great that your manager backed you up like that. Was the woman upset that you wouldn't serve her?

• *you saw someone's pet being attacked by another animal? Would you try to break it up?
It depends on what type of animal the pet is. My first instinct would be to stop the fight, but I wouldn't want to be harmed in the process.

* you were in a store that was being robbed? Would you try to stop them?
No. I wouldn't because after all of the jobs I have worked and all of the training I have had to deal with these situations, I know the wisest thing to do is to cooperate and stay calm.

* you were a bartender and a very pregnant lady came up asking for hard liquor, obviously to get drunk? Would you serve her?
Unless she was visibly drunk, I would not be able to refuse her alchohol but I would want to. If she however seemed even just a little tipsy, I would refuse her no doubt.

* you worked for a school and suspected a child was being abused? Would you say something?
I definitely would. There are too many schools were children come from abusive homes, and aren't taken care of properly. I would want to change that.

*you hear someone getting sick in the bathroom? Do you ask if they need help?
Yes. I'd hope someone would do the same for me too.

*someone is in an accident? Are you one of the first to respond?
It depends on the situation. But usually, yes I am.

*there's trash on the ground next to a trash can? Do you pick it up?
It depends where the trash can is and what type of trash it is. If I'm at work, I would definitely pick up the trash. But if I was outside a random store and I saw trash on the ground, I wouldn't pick it up. Especially if it was something nasty like dirty toilet paper or gum. People should throw their own sh!t away.

*someone is rushing to get inside behind you, but to hold the door would make you wait a while? Do you stand there and wait for them? Do you hold the door on elevators?
I would hold the door for the person rushing in. But I definitely don't hold the door on elevators. When I get in, if there is no one around I push the "close door" button as quickly as possible. I'd rather be in their alone... elevators are so awkward.

The manager went over and spoke to her, actually. That is what is perfectly within your right as a server or bartender - you can ask the manager to do anything you are not comfortable doing. I told her I didn't want to serve her and why (the real reason and the fake reason), and he went over and dealt with it. He started off by saying we did not have the beer she wanted, but did she want a St Pauli Girl (nonalcohlic beer) instead? She took the hint and ordered a coke, but if she had made a stink he had the "stumble" that I witnessed as a backup reason.
• What would you do if: *you saw someone's pet being attacked by another animal? Would you try to break it up?

If it were my pet or a friend's pet, definitely. If not, and I weren't afraid of getting attacked, I'd intervene.

* you were in a store that was being robbed? Would you try to stop them?

If they're armed, and I'm not, I will stay as quiet as possible and hope not to get shot.

* you were a bartender and a very pregnant lady came up asking for hard liquor, obviously to get drunk? Would you serve her?

Legally, I would have to. And I'm not losing my job because some lady has effed up priorities.

* you worked for a school and suspected a child was being abused? Would you say something?

Of course! You're mandated to by law!

*you hear someone getting sick in the bathroom? Do you ask if they need help?

Is it wrong that when this happens, I usually just assume they're bulimic?

*someone is in an accident? Are you one of the first to respond?

I have been in a few cases. I will stop and get people help if I can.

*there's trash on the ground next to a trash can? Do you pick it up?

No. Ew.

*someone is rushing to get inside behind you, but to hold the door would make you wait a while? Do you stand there and wait for them? Do you hold the door on elevators?

I always hold the door.
• Ooh fun!

*you saw someone's pet being attacked by another animal? Would you try to break it up?
Probably not because I would be chicken about getting hurt. I would try to alert someone who could help better though.

* you were in a store that was being robbed? Would you try to stop them?
I might try to sneak call 911 or something but like PP I would rather get robbed than robbed and killed/hurt/have someone else get hurt.

* you were a bartender and a very pregnant lady came up asking for hard liquor, obviously to get drunk? Would you serve her?
I don't think so, as pro-choice as I am that makes me extremely uncomfortable. I feel like most bars have protocol for that so I would ask about that while training.

* you worked for a school and suspected a child was being abused? Would you say something?
Any teacher, teachers aide, etc. working with children is a mandated reporter and is legally responsible to report it. I would even if it wasn't the law though, child abuse makes me sick.

*you hear someone getting sick in the bathroom? Do you ask if they need help?
If they were a mild acquaintance, definitely. I might be a little shyer if I didn't know who it was. It would depend on how sick they were.

*someone is in an accident? Are you one of the first to respond?
Honestly, probably not. I'm not great in those kinds of high-stress situations. I would hope I'd call 911 if they weren't there already.

*there's trash on the ground next to a trash can? Do you pick it up?
If it's not super gross or I have a tissue or something, yeah. I hate litter.

*someone is rushing to get inside behind you, but to hold the door would make you wait a while? Do you stand there and wait for them? Do you hold the door on elevators?
Yeah, I usually hold doors and elevators. I lived in a dorm building with 14 floors for 2 years and I know how much it sucks to have to wait for another elevator.
And if the stormy weather came...I'd just kiss you in the rain... Daisypath Anniversary tickers image

no id be too scared

* you were a bartender and a very pregnant lady came up asking for hard liquor, obviously to get drunk? Would you serve her?
no I'd definitely talk to a manager

* you worked for a school and suspected a child was being abused? Would you say something?
don't you legally have to report stuff like that anyways???

*you hear someone getting sick in the bathroom? Do you ask if they need help?
I might, I'm very queasy with that kind of stuff though

*someone is in an accident? Are you one of the first to respond?
I'd call 911 or the police but if there was blood I wouldn't im not good with that stuff.
*there's trash on the ground next to a trash can? Do you pick it up?

*someone is rushing to get inside behind you, but to hold the door would make you wait a while? Do you stand there and wait for them? Do you hold the door on elevators?
I will wait to hold doors and elevators for sure

Anniversary

• *you saw someone's pet being attacked by another animal? Would you try to break it up?
No. I'm not getting bitten getting in the middle of a dog fight. Sorry.

* you were in a store that was being robbed? Would you try to stop them?
Absolutely not. I think it's pretty stupid to do so, actually. Property is never worth your life, and possibly endangering others in the store.

* you were a bartender and a very pregnant lady came up asking for hard liquor, obviously to get drunk? Would you serve her?
Yes. That would be my job, and it's not illegal.

* you worked for a school and suspected a child was being abused? Would you say something?
Absolutely. I'm pretty sure most people who work in schools are mandated reporters anyway.

*you hear someone getting sick in the bathroom? Do you ask if they need help?
Yes.

*someone is in an accident? Are you one of the first to respond?
Yes.

*there's trash on the ground next to a trash can? Do you pick it up?
Yep.

*someone is rushing to get inside behind you, but to hold the door would make you wait a while? Do you stand there and wait for them? Do you hold the door on elevators?
Of course. That's just common courtesy in my book (but, I am from the south).
