Ah, the Snow

My school is open today, although many others in the area are closed. People are outraged, but here's the thing: We go 8cm (3in) of snow overnight, it's not windy out, and city and school officials are getting the roads cleared with no problem. We go to school on days like today all the time, but people seem to think we shouldn't have to because of weather that was predicted (and never came). Time for everyone to pull on their big kid undies and grow up.

How's the weather in your area? And what did you do yesterday if you were snowed in?

The weather is getting bad here. Mind you being in an office tower makes everything look worse than it really is because I'm essentially in a snow globe with all the snow coming off of the roofs around me.

However, it did take over 1.5 hours to get to work this morning and my boss is going to monitor the weather as the day goes on and may send us home. The weather is only suppose to get worse for us as the day goes on.

We got 10 cm last night and they're forecasting 25-45 cm will fall today.  It's just started flurrying now.  We're supposed to get the brunt of it between noon and 5, so I've heard.  All schools are cancelling in anticipation.  It is quite slippery out there.

Andplusalso: Freezing rain tonight, changing to snow.  Lovely.

Right now we're at -14 (not counting the wind chill, which apparently feels like -20!) We actually got very little snow here in Denver, but most of the schools are closed (and were yesterday too) due to not wanting kiddos waiting outside for busses in these cold temps. Totally understandable I think.

I agree though, I often think people just want to get out of work/school more than they are concerned about safety when there is snow. Just take your time and be cautious. I will say though...we are fairly used to it here - but I believe some areas caught in this storm are not used to snow at all. That would be a different situation all together.

Paige, freezing rain makes everything worse. Some schools here cancelled last night in anticipation as well. We were supposed to get 30cm total, so we'll see if it all comes. If it does, it's gonna be nasty. It has started blowing a little bit again now, so we'll see.

Hazel, how long does it usually take to get to work?

Beads, it really seems to vary around here. So many schools did cancel in anticipation, but mine didn't. And there is a blizzard warning still in effect here although it seems to be clearing up. Honestly, with a blizzard warning I feel like it's better to cancel in anticipation JIC. Especially with all the bad snow some areas had in December.

I'm not at school though, I decided it wasn't worth the  commute.

We've had warnings in effect since Monday. I'm not sure what, if any, are still in effect now. This particular area is generally safe from the wicked snow that London, Sarnia, and Delhi get. I agree that students shouldn't have to go in if they feel it is unsafe, and the university has published that sentiment as well. Some profs are cancelling class if they come in from out of town.

Beads - On a good day with no weather or traffic issues 40 minutes.

I just hate this city, the tv news tells people to take public transit if they can, then the radio says that public transit is cancelling routes so it is going to be a long wait. Then they say if you aren't an essential service to stay home. It is friggin ridiculous, I know for a fact that the person working retail selling luggage is not an essential service but they don't have sick days and if they don't show up the store doesn't open and they'll likely get fired. The city needs to step in and call it a snow day when people start saying crap like that. Plenty of people don't want to travel in these conditions, but having the choice not to is a whole other story.

Well, in northern Ohio we got freezing rain from about 4:30 last night until sometime in the middle of the night. Right now the radar says we have nothing happening. When I look out my window, I see big old snowflakes coming down. Everything is covered in a layer of ice, snow, ice, and now snow again. But, I hear the roads are actually in decent condition. They knew it was coming, so everything was salted ahead of time. But, schools are still closed.

Well we didn't get the predicted apocalyptic ice storm. It didn't snow or ice a single bit. In fact, it is currently 45F and sunny outside.

Hehe yeah it is really nice! It actually feels somewhat spring-like :) We'll be in for a shock though when it gets below freezing again.

It is seriously a big mind game. You know you are almost there, so you don't turn around, because it can't be THAT much longer. Oh, I wish! Then you lose an hour of your life to traffic that you'll never get back.

Although the radio played Lily Allen's Smile, which definitely made me smile.

In Chicago we got about 15-18 inches of snow and had gusts up to 70 mph along the lake front last night (which is where FI and I live).  We lost power for about 5 hours, and thought that our windows might blow out, but they didn't. It is still snowing now, but not as windy. I have a "snow day" for grad school. . . but I'll probably go in later when the snow stops. People were trapped on the lake shore high way for over 5 hours last night. It is a helluva good blizzard.

We're okay here, but my sister is currently in Iowa City, IA, and they got BURIED. I woke up to pictures in my FB feed of what looks like almost 2 feet of snow. Her bedroom window, at half-street-level, is almost covered. Cars are lumps. Her roommate is standing in one picture with snow up to her thighs. I kind of wish I were there to enjoy the snow day with her!

All the schools in my area canceled last night. There's hardly any snow outside. It was amusing to wake up this morning and see nothing. We were hit worse back in December (it took them a few days to dig everyone out and the area was in a state of emergency). Today school officials just looked silly.

    Beads, YGPM again.

We really did have great weather here last week. So warm! But at least this one didn't turn out as bad as the freak one in December that caught people off guard. As long as people are safe.
