Saturday Night Silly Question

Chillin waiting for my peach cheesecake to finish baking, and thought I'd say hello and get fun answers from you ladies.

(And the silly Saturday night question is...)

What random couples, fictional or IRL, do you root for? Besides friends/parents compel you to champion a given relationship.

Betraying my age a bit, I have a long commitment to the Buffy & Angel pairing. The idea of Spuffy makes me gag.

Also have never gotten over the fact that Jo and Laurie didnt end up together in "Little Women". Book version, but ESPECIALLY movie version with Winona Ryder and Christian Bale.

As to public figures, I root for Will and Kate (because their story is just fabulous and they seem really grounded by each other) and very arbitrarily, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner (no idea why, they just seem nice together and their kids are cute?)

Any that you root against? I don't really root against real people.
This may be blasphemy for some on here, but I strongly disliked the Harry/Ginny pairing in Harry Potter. Thought it was too convenient and not well developed.

I always kind of thought that, too. You're not alone. They ended up being cute, but that they ended up together at all confused me a bit.

Any Doctor Who fans here? I understand why Amy & Rory are a good thing, and why the Doctor & River Song are a good thing, but I still can't help but want the Doctor & Amy to be a thing. Maybe the writers will wise up with the next companion.

I tend to root against any & all Kardashian relationships, just because I'm not sure they would know what to do with happiness if it beat them over the head with a fire extinguisher.

On New Girl I totally root for the Jess/Nick pairing!

PotC - Jack Sparrow and Elizabeth Swan, I love the tension.

And yes, it is blasphemy to make that statement about Harry/Ginny!

In all seriousness though, what about it is too convenient and how is it not well developed in your opinion? Personally, I believe she set up for it from the start, and it developed nicely over time. Obviously the series wasn't Harry Potter and the Romance of the Ages, so I don't think Harry/Ginny relationship needs to eat a large portion of the series.

I want to like Beyonce and Jay-Z, but I don't really pay them much attention.

And I DEFINITELY wanted Lorelai and Luke to get married and have lots of babies.

I'm a big fan of House/Cuddy, Mulder/Scully, Pepper/Tony and Lupin/Tonks.

I also enjoy the Bruce Banner/Tony Stark bromance.

Main reasons I didn't like the H/G pairing:

1) Too much symbolism with Harry as dead ringer for James and Ginny mirroring Lily Evans with the red hair thing

2) Set up was poor IMO. Ginny's this girl with a crush who is Ron's sister for books 2 - 4, and in OoTP I felt like we could move on from Ginny in general since she had gotten over the crush. Then HBP changes the script completely, ,and suddenly it's all Ginny Ginny Ginny. she's super good at quidditch, dating Dean and stoking fires of jealousy everywhere... I didn't like the random power up. I think JKR may have overemphasized certain aspects late in the game to make the relationship work, but it had the effect for me of H/G being forced down my throat. Compare it to the very natural playing out of Hermione and Ron

I should probably disclaimer and say I LOVED PS through OoTP, but HBP and especially DH were let downs for me. And I thought the epilogue was unnecessary and disappointing.

Hmm I root for: Blair/Chuck (Gossip Girl), Elena/Damon (Vampire Diaries), Robin/Barney (HIMYM), Clark/Lana (Smallville), Tony/Ziva (NCIS), Zoe/Wade (Hart of Dixie), Casey/Cappie (Greek). I was actually a fan of Spike/Buffy, Angel just pissed me off.

Man, I watch some crappy shows. Haha.

I root against Edward and Bella. Kristen Stewart and anyone really.

I would say that we should fight over your dismissal of Angel, but you root for Chair. I watched only the first three seasons of Gossip Girl, but I still follow it via the hilarious recaps/comments on the nymag page only to see if Chuck and Blair are still together...

I ignore Twilight, didn't read the books or see the movies, so don't have the Bella loathing. I am a Katniss/Gale person, but that's through only reading the first book and seeing the first movie.

I guess I just rooted for Spike and Buffy more not for their relationship, but just because Spike was my favorite character and most entertaining. I found Angel boring. But his relationship with Buffy was better.

I actually enjoy the symbolism of the pairing, but I can see how it would seem a little cliche and too in your face.

I guess I took the focus shifting to Ginny more as a coming of age type thing. The little sister of his best friend is growing into a woman, and Harry is starting to notice. We didn't really see Ginny as much of a focus mid-series, so I don't think it is all too weird that she happens to be a talented witch. As for why it was suddenly Ginny, Ginny, Ginny, I took it as Harry's attention has been set on her and suddenly he's paying more mind to her, hence the book paying more mind to her too.

Perhaps it is because ever since CoS I was calling that Harry and Ginny would get together (mainly because I wanted it to be that way)? I think the reason why the playing out of Hermione and Ron seems more natural is because those two are part of the main characters throughout the entire series. We see more of Ron and Hermione, and therefore we see more of the development of their relationship. Comparing the developement of the H/G relationship to the R/H relationship is kind of unfair because of course the R/H is going to be more detailed and sorted out. It is the nature of the book. It would have taken several extra books to spread the storyline out enough to work in a detailed developement of H/G.

Yes, she could have focused more on it - but since I don't really consider the relationship of  H/G as important as other parts of the storyline, I understand and support why an author would chose to limit this. Books can only go so long, IMO.

But I do agree, the last few books let me down some too. I really enjoy the earlier books more, but that doesn't mean I dislike the later ones! As for the epilogue... now that could have been a little more detailed, though I get it for what it is. Personally I think it was thrown in there for the fans, to give some sort of final closure and to tie up a few of the loose ends, but I still would have liked to see more.

I'm a total shipper. Let me count the ways:

Speaking of Angel (which I just recently introduced H to), my pair of choice was Fred & Wesley. Damn you, Joss Whedon. I think I was more of a fan of Spuffy than Buffy & Angel. I didn't like Angel much until the show Angel, and even then, Wesley was my favorite character.

I'm with Stillwell on Tony Stark and Pepper Potts. I had an irrational fear that Joss Whedon would kill off Pepper in The Avengers.

Also Castle & Beckett (Castle), Nick & Jess (New Girl), Nikita & Michael (Nikita), Veronica & Logan (Veronica Mars), and I know there have been many more in the past.

I have an unhealthy obsession with Sex and the City, so I will always root for Carrie and Big They're my favorite on screen couple. 

I never really rooted for Kelly with anyone on 90210 because I feel like she just jumped around to all the guys and it annoyed me to no end. She was a beotch.

Oh.. and I really root for Jason and Bethenny Frankel. I know she's a harsh woman, but I feel like she's just a tad crazy (like we all can be) and misunderstood. They're so insanely hilarious together on their show, and they play off of each other in the best ways. It almost seems like their personalities wouldn't work with anyone except one another. Plus, that beautiful baby Bryn needs her mommy and daddy.

I hate Carrie and Big. I think they are an unhealthy couple. I loved Aiden, but he was too good for Carrie. I'm not a big Carrie fan in general though.
