Because I said they should.

Why didn't the Magic Schoolbus ever go on a field trip through the female reproductive system?? Imagine how much more we'd know about our bodies if only that crazy redheaded teacher had taken us on that journey to find out! Instead we have to rely on lame "I Got It!" videos and moms who don't know exactly how to explain it... and I know there are books but still. I could have known a lot more about my body before I was in my teens if only the Magic Schoolbus went there.

Just sayin'.

Wasn't there that curly haired red-headed kid that always got anxious on field trips? I can't remember his name, but something tells me he wouldn't have done well on that trip. It's probably why it never happened.

Hahah, this reminds of when my mom told me about when she started her period. So, apparently when she was a preteen in Vietnam, they didn't offer uh... sex education. So when she started her period she started freaking out because she thought she had sat on a nail or something, but didn't feel it. Then she went on to tell me that school uniforms for women over there are pretty lightweight almost sheer white, so most girls would just stay home during their period because they didn't have the luxuries of tampons or pads like we do here. She said to consider myself lucky for the (albeit limited) knowledge we get from sex ed.

Am I old or something that I never saw the Magic Schoolbus?

But I will say my education mostly consisted of my mom handing me a book when I was about 12.

I dunno, Leia... I'm 27 and it was totally on when I was a kid.

    Panda- your poor mom! Frown

By the time the school showed us girls the video about starting your period, I'd already started mine. It was a waste of time I could have spent playing Oregon Trail.

I must be old too.. I never heard of the Magic Schoolbus either. My education came from Sweet Valley Twins book 42: Jessica's Secret. Where Elizabeth gets her period and Jessica doesn't... LOL. I was in 2nd or 3rd grade at the time.

Hmm...the TV show started in September 1994, so that explains why I never saw it (I was in high school by then). But the books first started in 1985. I just never read any of them.

    And I love Oregon Trail.

I was a late bloomer.  Mom had already given me all the talks, and I had seen my older sister in freak out mode.

I'd already gotten the samples in the mail, all my friends had started, and I kept an emergency stash in my locker at school. (That my friends raided.) So I was prepared. I didn't need the magic school bus, Mom had everything under control.

It was spring break of 8th grade when I did.  Mom was taking me to the doc that summer if I didn't.

I can't remember discussing it in school.

Ha ha I remember those videos. In 4th grade they put all the girls in the entire grade in one room and all the boys in another.  We watched that video and after they asked if any one had gotten their period yet. I raised my hand but I was the ONLY one in the whole grade who had. Talk about embarrassing!

When I was in 6th grade, I was in the "gifted" program. And they used our social studies time for the "gifted" class. We learned history that year by going through all the different events in that song, "We didn't start the fire". We listened to it on the first day and started with Harry Truman and ended with cola wars... I was so sick of that song by the end of 6th grade.

Wrkn, I was a late bloomer too. 9th grade over winter break! I remember how embarassing it was to be the only one without my period yet. Everyone else would complain about cramps and I'd just pretend to know what was going on. My mom never mentioned it to me either, so I was freaked out when it happened since she never seemed too approachable about the subject...

My Mom sat me down and explained everything on my 9th birthday, as I had been prodding her to explain "sexing" for awhile.  I was like, "That's it? That's all there is to it?"  It was just very matter-of-fact.

I got my period the first week of 6th grade.  I was the first among my friends, and felt so proud.  I was even regular IMMEDIATELY - I haven't missed a period since!  I remember pretending to have cramps just so I could remind them that I was grown up enough to have my period, even though I didn't even have a twinge of cramps.  Karma's a jerk, and about 8th grade I got cramps with a vengence and period so heavy I was completely debilitated for 2 days every month.

I loved the magic school bus! It rocked my socks!

We got sex ed starting in grade 5, so most girls wouldn't have had their periods yet. I didn't get mine till I was 15 (ya, that's not typo...talk about late bloomer). My Mom was giving me till I was 16 to take me to the doctor. I had been extremely underweight my entire life, so it was no surprise I was so late. I was so relieved when it finally did come, I was beginning to worry there was something wrong with me.

I was a little bit of a late bloomer, I didn't get my first period until I was 13. My mom explained the whole thing to me, but of course I got it while I was out for the day with my dad, and didn't have anything with me, so I had to use toilet paper until I got home. And my first period I had REALLY bad cramps, which my mom never bothered to tell me about or how to take care of them. And she was gone for the weekend. I was too embarassed about it to tell my dad what was going on so I suffered for a few days before my mom came home and introduced me to Midol. As for the whole reproductive side of things, when I was about 15 and hand my first real boyfriend, my mom took me down to a women's health clinic where they went into detail about all the reproductive bits, exactly how babies are made and then they went over all the different methods of birth control, and even gave me samples of most.
I found some schools did a lot better than others. When I started high school I went to school in the suburbs and they showed us how to use a condom but never got any hands on experience with them, nor did they discuss any type of birth control besides abstinence, the pill and condoms. In my second year of high school I switched to an inner city school and they went in detail about all the different methods of birth control and even had us put a condom on a woody with "drunk goggles" on to simulate how difficult it is to put one on when you're hammered. That school also had flavoured condoms and samples of lube in the school councellor's office for students to take....
