BM Dresses... Opinions?

So after we went and ordered my dress, My BM's and I went to look for their dresses. We found a designer that they all like and and they can each pick their own style and they will all be the midnight dupioni fabric. My only issues with the dresses is the price. They dresses are between $189 - $229. There is a 25% discount if they buy in Jnauary and a $40 discount for any other time. (the partner with the tux place for the discount) Also, most of my girls are short and will need to have their dress hemmed if not altered in other places. So, alterations could run the $30-$75. Most of them are okay with the price, but I know it is more than I wanted them and they wanted to spend.

Here are the dresses:

I fell in love with that line of dresses for my BMs but opted out because of the price. Not the price you mentioned, but because in Canada they are $100 more expensive.

I say look around and if they find something they like equally and is cheaper then go with that. I found the dresses at WTOO were more wearable and modern then alot of others that I saw. Basically, what are your BMs saying? You can look around and if they keep leaning towards to WTOO dresses then I'd say stick with them.

Edit - Damn, I got it wrong I get Alfred Sung and WTOO dresses confused.
  • The dresses are gorgeous!!! If they're ok with the prices, then that's fine, so I voted that way. They look like dresses they could possibly wear elsewhere, too. I would, anyhow, but that's just cuz they're perty! : )

BTW: Everyone loved the scarf idea that I stole from you, lol. My next sewing project is going to be a pair of drawstring pajama pants and then I bought a pattern for a very simple dress! You've inspired me to take up sewing as a hobby! : )

  • I love the third to last and the last one!

  • I love love love the classiness of #5 and my second choice is #3 for the simplicity.

I've worn a similar DB style to #6 and it worked well for my (voluptuous) upper half. It also looked great on the teeny tiny girls.

They are pretty aren't they? They fit everyone's personalities so well. And I know my sister already is planning on wearing her to our cousin's wedding 6 months after mine.  (She is wearing the first one)

I'm so glad everyone liked their scarves! Pajamas are super easy to make! I'm glad you've found a new fun hobby! :)

  • Those dresses are gorgeous. Did your bridesmaids tell you what their limit was? Take a look at Wedding Accessory Superstore <--clicky. That's where I ordered my BM dresses from and they were something like 30% less expensive than through a regular store. Once you find out what the price is, talk to your BM. If they say they are ok with it, then don't worry about it for another minute! :) I've had to let the guilt go of people spending a lot of money travelling for my wedding... they will let you know if it's too expensive for them!

Then I would let them order the style they like. if they are all the same length and color, does it matter to you if they aren't 100% matching?

I wanted my BMs to feel comfortable in their dress, so I did that - I picked eggplant, and long, and Alfred Angelo. From there I let them order whatever they wanted. :)

ITA. I would keep looking for something a little more in the original price range, but if you can't find anything, and the girls are willing to spend that much, then go ahead. I would just revisit the pricing one more time and speak to each bridesmaid individually in case there is one person who doesn't feel comfortable bringing up their financial situation in front of the group.

Thanks ladies! I originally said I wanted the dresses to be under $150, but everyone said they would go a little over that price. So, the dresses themselves (with discount) are in the right range, it is the alterations that push them over. I think I will see if I can find them online like Tiger did for her dresses. Wish me luck!

ETA: Tiger, that site does have the Alfred Sung line! THANKS!

  • If they say they are ok with the price then its ok.  Just do something really nice for them for being your BMs.  The dress are gorgeous, I'm glad that they all could find something they want to wear.
  • Ohhh I LOVE #1 I would totally wear that dress and I love the midnight color.  I voted that if the girls like the dresses and they are all comfortable with the pricing then stick with what you found..unless of course you find a deal with the online site.  They could always take it to a local smaller alterations place for a simple change like a hem.

  • I love love love those dresses, and I also love having different dresses in the same color. My friend let us do that for her wedding, and it was fantastic - because we were all able to pick a dress that we were comfortable in, and that fit our shapes the way we wanted. Positive points for you!

The bride was also concerned about the prices for our dresses, but we were all in agreement that we liked them, and liked that she was letting us chose our own, so we were okay with the prices. So as long as they're all on board, go with it!

I think that is a perfectly fair range in price. If a BM wants to spend under $200, or know she will have to hem, then she can go with the cheaper ones at $189. My dress for my bestie's wedding was $155 and that was well within the range we all expected to pay. I didn't end up having to get it hemmed, even though I'm short, because I wore higher heeled shoes. Everyone has a lot of room to decide with these options, and I like that.

Love the dresses, BTW. They are all super cute :)

So the quality where you bought your BM dresses was good, then? How about shipping time? Any issues on color? I'm pretty nervous to order online, but they have some cute dresses for great prices.

  • Are those from Bill Levkoff?  My cousin has something VERY similar in that same beautiful navy color.  She has NINE bms and they have that sweetheart one - fourth from the top.  We looked pics together online last night and the dresses look really nice.  Anyway, I answered that if they're ok with spending more, go with that.  Those are all dresses that are completely wearable again anyway!
  • I think they are lovely dresses.  If people say they are ok with the price, then that should be fine.  All of those styles look like they'd be easy to use again (I love #6, and might end up finding that one myself for when I go to symphony concerts and nice events).

[QUOTE]I love the dresses. I badly want #1, just because. However, if you guys come up with a price point originally, I'd want to honor that price point. I'd do that one of two ways: go back to the drawing board, and choose new dresses, or pay whatever the difference was between the agreed-upon price point and the actual cost of the dress/alterations is for each girl.

YES. Take if from someone who was just on the other side of this, it is really frustrating when the bride does this. Especially because everyone may not want their hair done, so you are esentially doing something for your photos. YKWIM?
