Stupid student health network. Vibes please?

I went to the Dr. on campus today to get a requisition for an ultrasound, and they said that I probably won't be able to have it done until December because they're so booked!

Backstory: I was having some pains in my lower abdomen for a few months. I spoke to my GP about it a couple times, and after about 9 months he sent me for an ultrasound. It turned out there is a cyst on my ovary, which I'm assuming was the cause of the pain the whole time. Trouble is, I left for school just after the results came back, so now I have to get it monitored at school. They said if it's still there (not a functional cyst) then I should have surgery to remove it. I was hoping to have surgery if needed back home where I can have my mommy and daddy close if I need them. (I'm a big kid when it comes to medical stuff)

Any vibes you could send my way to get an ultrasound appointment sooner than December would be amazing!

That's so long to wait for just an ultrasound, especially if you're still having pain!! I'll keep everything crossed and be sending you T&Ps!

I hate dealing with the health center on campus. I will keep my fingers crossed for you!

I know there's only so much you can do, but I would push them for an earlier date, especially if you are in pain. I assumed that a burst cyst was the reason for my abdominal pain...turned out to be endometriosis and a faulty gallbladder, both of which could have caused serious damage if I had let them go on unaddressed. I'm not in any way, shape or form saying those are your issues, but (according to my paramedic father) you should never, ever wait on abdominal pain - there are too many serious issues that can be the root of it.

Would your insurance cover you to go elsewhere? What would the time/cost ratio be if you went to the ER, rather than a doctor?

I had issues with my Health Center in college too. They got me in quickly when I was sick, but then gave me penicillin when I had mono, which I guess you're not supposed to do, so I ended up having mono, strep throat, and a rash all over my body that was like sunburn in that it was hot and made me cold easily, but also itched. And it created a large lump in my rear where she stuck me. I still can feel part of that lump now, 3 years later. Maybe it would be better to go to the ER.

Yowzas...sounds like you got the gel pennicillin. Which, frankly, is hands-down the most painful shot known to man. My sister had to hold me down when I got one, I was going to claw the nurse's eyes out, it was so painful.

I actually had the same thing happen to me. I went to the ER, told them I have mono (I had had it before, so I recognized the symptoms) and I was basically there to get a written note explaining such for work/school, and the doc insisted I had strep and shot me full of pennicillin. Turns out I had mono, and the pennicillin just made it worse. Took me two months to get over the illness portion of it, and a good four months to get rid of the fatigue. I honestly think that that whole episode is partly why I have such nasty fatigue nowadays.

Since I'm Canadian, in some ways I'm at the mercy of the scheduling because there is no 'competition' with everything being provincially supported. I did call them back, and I spoke to the booking receptionist, so she is going to contact some other radiology labs to see if I can get a faster appointment somewhere else. If she doesn't come through by Monday, I'll have to get more aggressive (for lack of a better word) about it.

The pain isn't too bad most of the time, mostly dull and tends to come in waves throughout my cycle, but is worst during sexy time. (which means I don't really do that at all lately :( ) Before I left for school we determined it was definitely caused by a cyst and not something else, but before we went the surgery route the Drs (GP and GYN) wanted to wait and see if it would absorb or shrink after a few cycles.

Thanks for the vibes ladies, I'll keep you updated

ETA & off-topic: Oceana, your new siggy pic is adorable. You guys look so in love, and so excited!

Thank you :) That was immediately after our man-and-wife kiss. It was a split second of giggling like little kids, but thankfully, our photog got some shots of it.
