Age Difference/Pretty Little Liars

Question. How do y'all feel abut the age difference between the teenage Aria and her English teacher Ezra? It has to be at least 4 years, right?

How is it that this is okay on TV, but in real life, it's a huge scandal and can ruin a teacher's career?

I kinda have a problem wtih a TV show romanticizing this kind of situation.

Thoughts?

It's ok because Ezra is so yummy.

...Mostly kidding.  In all seriousness, I agree with you.  I've thought about it a couple of times.  Especially in last night's episode, where he was contemplating leaving for another job, and she got all mad at him... but if he really wants the relationship to continue, he really has to leave that school eventually.

Anyway, there are a lot of things going on in that show that I wouldn't approve of in real life, so I try not to let it bother me too much.

On another note, I know somebody IRL whose husband was once her high school teacher.  They've been married 50 years now.

I've only watched an episode or two.  I figured it would've blown up by now.

No, I don't like it.  I come from an itty bitty town, and more than a handful of teachers lost their licenses for this behaviour.*  Not cool.

*Damn ALL you Canadians.  Look what you made me do!  I noticed this before I posted, but I'm gonna leave it, just so you can see what you've done to me.

OH HOLY COW, I thought I was the only one who watched this show.  In fact, I got yelled at by one of my hallmates for watching it because "it's complete trash".

Any case, I agree.  Although I try to ignore it and focus on the fact that they didn't know that it was going to happen.  Ezra and Aria are my favorite couple on the show.  And Elle, you're right, he's totally yummy.  I think she was mad at him not for wanting to leave for another job though, but for contemplating leaving her and basically deciding that they didn't have a future, when she felt like she was doing everything to find a future for the both of them somewhere else.  Not trying to make it right, just how I saw it.  It's still super weird that he's her English teacher.

And there is a lot in that show that I don't approve of in real life either.  Which seems ironic to me.  It's on ABC Family.  I'd never let my kids watch the show.

Age difference though...BF is five and a half years older than I am.  I tease him about it all the time. He's turning 27 in June, and I turned 21 in December.  I understand that there's an age difference between the show and us, but it's kind of a similar situation.  I was only 17 when we met...and we started dating about a month after I turned 18.

I guess my problem is that it's on ABC family and is clearly aimed at teenagers. I feel like it's really irresponsible to portray a student/teacher relationship as romantic and okay.

So it's okay for teachers to date students? As long as they don't have sex? Or...what?

<div>According to PLL?  Yes.  Although from the looks of last night's episode, I expect a steamy little bedroom scene soon.  *blush*</div>

I haven't seen the show, but my first BF (when I was in high school) was a jr high teacher. The girl he dated before me was also in high school--possibly an ex-student, I can't remember. I was never his student, but I think it was wrong. If you've been out of high school for ten years, find someone who's at least old enough to drink, not a girl who's still in high school.

Ah! No way. That's not cool.
Teachers can definitely get fired for that. A little before I graduated they started implementing a rule that teacher's weren't allowed the respond to students if the student emailed them on a personal account. They said we could hide things that our teachers emailed back to us...? Like my married teacher with two kids is going to send 16 year old me a nude picture of him when I ask for homework help.

Also, teachers aren't allowed to accept friend requests on facebook until after the student graduates. I only added one teacher, and she was an awesome teacher...probably my favorite.

We did have a middle school teacher in my town that slept with one of her students. He was thirteen.
But maybe that's why my district was so strict.

As far as crushes on teachers, my boyfriend makes fun of me because I always develop a little crush on male professors. I think it's cause I'm staring at them for hours and I get bored.

Edit: Ugh, I'm starting to remember creepy teacher-student things from highschool. That thirteen year old that slept with one of his teachers graduated with me. Once, him an a teacher were making incredibly sexual jokes to eachother about his penis size. I remember her telling him she wasn't impressed because her husband's was much bigger. This was highschool, but still. It was very unprofessional.

Idk if any of you watched this from the beginning, but the only thing that I think makes this not a huge deal to me is that they met before he was her teacher. I don't think it is any worse than Dawson Creek or 90210 which was also geared at teenagers. Kids need to be able to tell the difference between reality and fiction.

I'm glad others watch the show! When I first started watching I was okay with it.. but then I put a little more thought into how old the girls really are. I assumed by their looks and actions they were at least 17. WRONG. Aria was 15 the first time she hooked up with Ezra, and even if it was before she knew he was her teacher, that is still disgusting. They should have at least made her old, not that it's okay to begin with! Teacher/student relationships are never okay. And even though I can't talk with a 10 year age difference, her being 15 and him being old enough to hold a college degree is NOT OKAY.
