Church dress code? (PIP)

Okay, so I bought a dress today that would be totally okay to wear in the Methodist church where I grew up, but I got to thinking about it and now I'm worried that it's too low-cut for Tyler's grandmother's Southern Baptist church on Christmas. The length is no problem, as it goes down to my knees, but I can see a lot of cleavage from above. In the pictures, I don't see it AS much, but, uh... yeah. Anyone know if this neckline will be kosher (lol) in a Southern Baptist church?

With the shrug I'll be wearing with it.

Sans shrug. Well, besides the shrugging of my shoulders.

My SUPER AWESOME SHOES that I got today, ooooo.

Also I bought my first Spanx and was horrified when I found out they are crotchless AND the package says to wear them without panties. WHAT.

  • I like it and with the shrug I think it's especially church-worthy.  Also, the expressions in your picture are making me laugh my ass off.  Especially 3 red wines into my evening (and still pre-spaghetti pie).
  • Based on the one Southern Baptist I know I'd say it might be a little low but I think you could get away with it without too many old ladies clutching their pearls in horror :)

  • I like the idea of a satin-y black cami or tank underneath if possible.

Also, your expressions in your photos are hilarious and awesome.

  • I love it and think it would be fine, but I'm catholic and wear jeans to church most Sundays... Also, CROTCHLESS SPANX?!?!?! WTFBBQ?!?!

DUDE I SWEAR. I THOUGHT THAT I'D BROKEN THEM AS I WAS SAUSAGING IN. It apparently designed so you can pee through the hole in your Spanx when you're wearing them with a dress. I... uh... I'd rather just completely undress than pee through crotchless pantyhose, tyvm.

Despite my constant vitriol thrown toward those of the hipster persuasion, I ironically only wear hipster panties. It makes me feel dead inside.

Huh, I've never really though twice about just wearing my Spanx crotchless. Does that say something about me?

I think the idea of a tank top underneath is a good idea. I think Southern Baptists are similar to Catholics, in that every church you go to has a different vibe, and a different general level of formality. Like, my home church is totally ok with jeans, but there are some Catholic churches where that would be like spitting on the Pope.

ETA: I would definitely go with the shrug...some churches are really weird about shoulders showing

  • Wow...  Once again, I'm struck by love for this board...  the things I learn about being a girl here I have never picked up elsewhere. Spanx?  Had never heard of 'em. Crotchless spanx?  NEVER dreamed it.  O.o

I also giggled at your photos and think your expressions are awesome.

I think you'll be okay if you have the shrug--you can always dramatic cover over!
  • Being raised in a southern baptist home - I think you'll be fine. The shrug makes it a little less obvious.

Also, i adore you. Your faces in the pictures are fantastic.

Also, WTFBBQ - crotchless spanxs??? *headdesk*
  • Yeah, there's no doubt that I'm wearing the shrug, because I think that every temperature is icebox temperature.

  • Ohmigosh, this entire thread made my morning.. LoL!
Could you put a black satin-y tank underneath?
I second this. Having attended one or two religious ceremonies under-dressed (I had exposed arms during Yom Kippur once around super conservative Jewish people.. oi vey), I can tell you that being over-dressed is WAY more comfortable than being under-dressed.

Even with crotchless spanx.. Woo. I'm going to be on the look out for those the next time I go shopping, mainly because they sound entertaining. =)

Me too! Me too! I love this board.

Haha...I love the suggestion of sexytime with spanx...that made me giggle. It would certainly have to be done from behind in a dark room...with a dress staying on, because spanx...well...spanx just aren't sexy.
I'm not sure how the Southern Baptists feel about cleavage, so that could be an option if you think it's too low.

</div><div>Cleavage is kind of a big don't for us if it's blatantly obvious. But, from what I can tell, it's really not that big of an issue in your dress as long as you don't lean over. At all. Matter of fact, I'd try actually leaning back. So far back you can see your feet.</div><div>
</div><div>But no, in all siriusness, it should be fine. Your puppies aren't about to bust out of the dress, so I'm sure no one will even think twice about it. Shrugs are always a nice accessory though, just in case you start to feel uncomfortable.
