Missing Feral Kitty - Updated!

Not much of a question here, just sharing.

We care for a feral kitty who has lived in our complex longer than we have. We started feeding her in June 2009 when her previous caretaker moved away.

We haven't seen her in the last week (which isn't really unusual) but I noticed since this past Wednesday that she hadn't been eating her food during the day like she usually does. However, food would be gone by morning. I did a stakeout last night and planted a web camera. I found out who's eating the food, but it's not our feral kitty, Cali.

Today I'm going down to the city shelter to file a lost cat report and go through the cages. I really hate it, but FI is coming with this time me for moral support. (We had another homeless cat we cared for go missing last year. She wasn't feral, and I still hope that her original owner came back for her.)

Cali is really distrustful, and even though I've fed her every day for almost a year and a half, I can't get closer than 10 feet away from her (and that's a really good day).  Here are a couple photos, taken from when I used to feed her at the park.

She looks very healthy for a feral kitty.  Props to you for taking care of her.  I really hope that you either find her or that she reappears soon.

Thanks Elle. She leads a decent life for a feral. She's spayed, lives in a place that doesn't get too hot or cold, and gets dry food, a little canned food and fresh water every day. I usually see her once or twice a week when she comes for breakfast, and she always looks well-fed and clean.

Looks like a very pretty cat!  My mom has been feeding a stray cat in our neighborhood for about a year now.  Even though he or she is not really "her" cat she is still attached to it and would be very upset if anything ever happened to it.  She leaves a little bowl of cat food and water on our porch every evening and he comes and eats it!  I have seen him once and he is a good looking cat too!

I started feeding an outside cat a couple of years ago. When I first started feeding her, she was awful looking, she had more bare spots then hair and was super skinny. And she was just a little kitten. She started bringing her "boyfriend" around, so I was feeding him also. He had an ear missing and was really mean looking. He stopped showing up last year, but she still comes around. My mom and I just built her a little home in my backyard this week. My neighbor was letting her sleep in their garage, but they moved out a couple weeks ago. I'm still trying to get the cat to sleep in her new home.

Anyways... I completely understand. I always say the cat isn't mine, but if she disappears, I'll be really sad! Good luck!

That cat does look pretty healthy.

I also found a stray maybe 8 months ago. I always saw it in the parking lot in my apt. complex. She would meow at me but if I got close she ran away. Finally, one day she walked up, and I grabbed her. I figured if she didn't have fleas or anything she'd be easy to care for. Gave her a bath.. no fleas. She was just very skinny (bones sticking out skinny) with a flea collar on.

I figure the kitten was maybe 3-5 months old. I saw it outside all the time for almost a month, and if her owner was still around, they weren't feeding her. I tried to keep her, but my cat Shadow was SO on edge with the cat anywhere in the house. I was devastated, but luckily, one of my friends took her in. =]

    Thanks for the kitty stories!

We went to the city shelter and she wasn't there (no surprise). The good news is she's also not on the DOA list. I'm going to keep putting her food out and hope she comes back.

Good news! I kept the spy camera set up last night, and Cali showed up for food at 10:40pm and 3:40am. She's fine--she just hasn't been following the normal schedule for some reason.

Thanks for the stories and encouragement!
