I love Sirius so much.  I was convinced I would never forgive JKR for taking Sirius away from me, until (DEATHLY HALLOWS SPOILER WARNING) the scene where Harry, with the shades of his parents, Lupin, and Sirius, walks into the forest to meet Voldemort.  That scene was so beautiful, and Sirius and Lupin both had to die for it to happen.

Harry got the strength to face his own death from the idea that it would reunite him, in a way, with the ones he loved and lost.  Sirius was one of those people.

It's possible that I've thought about this a little too much.

A lot of people feel that way, and I don't completely disagree.  Lupin and Sirius were both such tragic characters that I wouldn't have minded seeing them actually get a chance to enjoy life.

I guess my main thing, though, is that the scene in the forest would not have been as meaningful to me if it had been just his parents.  So, even though horrible sacrifices were made for it, I wouldn't change that scene for the world.  I love it.  I've read it a million times and it makes me full-out cry every time.

I didn't list Snape as one of my favorites because he was responsible for so much frustration as I read the books, but I really appreciate him as one of the best examples of characterization in the series.  He was so complex and well done.

And his story really breaks my heart.

I thought all along that Snape would turn out to be loyal to Dumbledore. I felt like one of the lessons Harry had to learn was to see beyond his personal experience with someone and understand that even if he has negative experiences with someone, that doesn't define the person. That could still be a good person.

But I loved that Rowling kept me a little unsure up until the very end. :)

I also have to say that I absolutely adore Alan Rickman as Snape in the movies. That drawling sarcasm = pure awesomeness.

I completely agree with you about Snape's character providing a valuable lesson for Harry.  But...

I don't know that I would call Snape a "good" person.  Complicated?  Yes.  Tragic?  Definitely.  Misunderstood?  Completely.  But good?  That's tough for me to swallow.

His reasons for turning on Voldemort were mostly self-centered.  Even though the backstory with Lily explains or even justifies a lot of his behavior, it doesn't completely redeem him in my opinion, but that's part of what makes him so intriguing to me.

And, that was another important lesson for Harry -- the world is split into good people and evil people; it's full of shades of gray.

    By the way, ladies:

By the way, has everyone seen A Very Potter Musical?

If you have a couple spare hours, it's totally worth watching.  It's completely ridiculous, but it was obviously written by people who are very familiar with the series and knew what aspects of it to play with.  Every character is brilliant, but Draco and Ron are my favorites.

Aaaaah I had forgotten about the puppets!  Thanks for bringing me back to it, Deburnin!

I'm not sure how I feel about the idea of a "real" Harry Potter musical (obviously, there will never be one with MJs involvement now...).  I mean -- not gonna lie -- I would be first in line for tickets if it was done, but I like that pretty much all the Potter stuff outside of the movies has been made by fans for their own enjoyment and not for profit.  There's something so pure about that.

Yeah, I agree with you, Elle. I didn't mean that Snape is necessarily good. More that even people you dislike are capable of doing things that are noble or worthwhile? Just like you said -- the world is full of shades of gray, and it was important for Harry to really understand that.

I do see Snape as somewhat of a hero, though. Yeah, he wasn't always a good person. But he was capable of enduring some pretty hard things in order to ultimately achieve something he believed in. You know? We're all capable of making bad decisions and being despicable. I don't know. There is just so much redemption in his story, and I love it.

Deburnin -- ha ha, I LOVE that part!

You know who else I really enjoy in the movies? Luna Lovegood. Another perfect casting choice. And, the guy who played Wood, the Quidditch captain, in the first movie...drooool... But RPat in GoF? No bueno. I just don't find him at all attractive.

And yes, I totally love this thread. :)

Snape was extremely brave and intelligent.  But he never would have been a hero if he hadn't been guilty of being drawn into the dark side in the first place.  Of course, given his upbringing, he wasn't exactly set up for success.  I love the paralleling stories of Voldemort, Snape, and Harry.  All three were half-bloods who never really had a home or family until Hogwarts.  Voldemort went completely evil, Harry was never even tempted, and Snape is like the overlap in the venn diagram.  Brilliant work by JK.

I actually really liked Pattinson as Cedric.  I thought he fit the role perfectly.  Then he became sparkly Edward and forever ruined it.  Oh well.
