(F)MILs

**ORIGINAL POST*** (since TK is being dumb again)

I am reading a book called "Mothers in Law vs. Daughters in Law: Let there be peace!" and at one point it asks you to ask your SO what similarities he sees in the two of you.

So last night when we were in bed I asked him what similarities there are between his mom and I. It took him about thirty seconds before he said, "Honestly, not much. All that I can think of is your unending love for me". He knows he can fight with her, they can be incredibly angry with each other, but no matter what, he knows she will never love him less. And he says he feels that with me too.

Have you ever asked your SO what similarities there are between his mom and you? Would you be honored or mortified? lol.

I kind of figured he wouldn't find much in common with us, but I like the answer he came up with.

  • YIKES! This could be scary lol... I love his mother, but I don't think we are similar in the least! I'll have to ask him this sometime!

Lol, yeah I was afraid to ask for a while but was curious about what he'd say.

I'm really liking this book so far. It definitely feels like the stories are about me and I can talk to FI about issues I have with his mom with some kind of proof that it's common stuff, not just some conflict that we have uniquely. I think it's helping me understand things from her point of view and helping me to understand what I have to do if I want to create a better relationship with her. It's also helping me understand why I feel the way I do with certain issues I have...and then explain it to FI. It's pretty cool.

  • I've never thought to ask that either...hmmm I don't think he'd say there is much about us that is similar. The funny thing is that he is JUST like my dad..they even say the same little sayings every now and then which kinda freaks me out haha

FI is definitely similar to my dad in a lot of ways too. It works out great because they're fine with hanging out and even go hunting together for hours sitting out in the cold, just the two of them, lol. I can't see myself doing that with his mom. I went shopping with her once and was exhausted when I got back. We were only gone for like 2 hours but she is like a hummingbird, all over the place, back and forth with decisions.

I think he had a nice answer! : ) I don't think that he picked me because I am like his mom, I think he picked me because I'm the opposite of his mom. We both love him more than anything, but how we go about it is very different. I think he'd say we're both good cooks, but she doesn't like cooking and I do. She loves shopping and I don't. She loves talking and I don't. She loves TV and I don't. I love outdoors and she's afraid to get dirty. I like scary movies, she likes chick flicks. She tries to control FI, and I try to get him to break out of his shell.

  • I've never asked him, but I do remember when we first started dating, we were on the way to his parent's house and my first meeting with his mother (I had already met his father), and he said that he thought we would get along because we're pretty similar. Down-to-earth, not too chatty, laid-back. I'm actually much more like my FMIL than I am like my own mother, who's like the complete opposite of me.

  • I've never asked my BF to be honest. Her and I get along, but we're very different from one another. I'm a lot less conservative than her and more outspoken to be honest. We do have a few similarities like having a love for country music, mini coopers, and saving money whilst shopping. But other than that, personality wise we are very different.
