SYTTD: Big Bliss

I'm bothered by this version of the show.  I don't know why they needed to branch off and make it for plus sized women.  Why can't plus sized women be included in the "regular" SYTTD?  Are we really that different from non-plus sized women?  I want the same things when searching for my dress  - good fit, beautiful dress, feel good about it, right price point, etc.  Sooo why do we need to lump all us bigger ladies into one show?  I understand the marketing side and expanding to a different market but the whole concept bothers me a bit.  Thoughts?

Duh, we need to be segregated.

I hate that spin-off.  It pisses me off to no end. Just throw a bigger girl in every episode, it's not that hard.

"Say Yes To The Dress" - Sorry, had to google it to figure out what you were talking about.

Personally, I don't see a reason to separate them out. I think the show was probably asked to "diversify" a bit...but it's unfortunate that they do it in this way. As a size 12 to 14...I hate being made to feel "bigger" when larger sizes are not available...I cannot imagine wanting to be on a show that separates you out by size. I certainly wouldn't be signing up to be on the show.

I concur. It doesn't make sense to have this spin off... I mean they have a fairly diverse group of ladies trying on dresses, e.g., old and young, loud and soft spoken, semi-rich and rich, those who want white dresses and those who want red dresses, ...

Ugh, I remember when I was modeling for a bridal show- I had to get fitted at a "fancy" boutique. I'm a size 12/14 and they seriously didn't have any samples in my size. The girls commented that they needed no larger than size 8 models. I'm standing there squeezed into a size 10 and about to bust the seams. Crappy.

What a load of crappy crap.

Also, that show is a load of crap, too. Just sayin'.

Jen - I love your diversity of semi-rich and rich, couldn't agree more.

I agree, I don't think it was necessary to have the full spin off. Why can't they devote episodes to a particular item. For example, plus size brides, same sex brides, older brides, military brides, budget brides (not being a sample sale day)etc. Although I think maybe it does give a bit more realism to the show. I was finding average size girls were looking massive next to the really thin ones that are extremely clipped into their sample dresses, which is completely not realistic and shouldn't be encouraged. Honestly I think they can do a better job at being diverse.

So sorry you had to go through that Jeana. I wish women in this country could get over the "need to be a stick figure" mentality. There are women of all shapes and sizes that are absolutely gorgeous. I would rather see us focus on healthy lifestyles (ie: more veggies and exercise) than worry about what our dress size is! I look back a pics from high school and thing "god I was so beautiful, and I didn't even know it back then." I try to remember that now whenever I don't feel like I look the way I want...

I also hate the name. "Big Bliss". It makes me feel like people are saying, "Aww isn't that cute? Fat girls can get married too!" Ugh. Being a fat girl myself, I'm already insecure enough as it as about having to fit into a g*ddamn wedding dress. Let's throw a label on it, shall we? Also, a lot of the girls on the show don't even qualify in my head as "plus-sized". Fun fact: Marilyn Monroe, one of the sexiest women to ever walk the planet, wore a size 14. Funny to think that today she'd be considered "plus-sized".

PS: jenjennifer, that episode with red dress girl pissed me off a little.

I wholeheartedly agree.  Why does Big Bliss need to be its own show?  I feel like any marketing that could be had by Big Bliss is sort of negated by its very existence.  I think they should integrate the plus sized girls in the show and make whatever marketing remarks they want.

I remember disliking that episode too... I can't remember why. Actually if I think about it, I can't really pinpoint a person in any episode that I DID like... What does that say??? I'm in it for the dresses ;)

My plus sized friend was very excited for this show to air. We were discussing SYTTD one day, and she said she was so happy they had made a plus sized version. She thought it would be cool to see women similar to her size and shape going through the same kinds of things she tends to experience when buying clothing. I guess she could relate better to a plus sized version of SYTTD versus the regular version.

I don't see the need to have the extra spinoff show. To me, it does seem very segregating. I think they should just work on putting women of every shape and size into all of the episodes of the original version.

My guess is that SYTTD is a money-maker for TLC. In order to have more episodes, they needed to create a spin-off show. The first one was Big Bliss, but stay tuned for Over the Hill, Champagne Tastes/Beer Budgets, and the one I'm most excited for Blondes Have More Fun.

You might as well do a spinoff of "Bridezillas" like that, too. I've seen more immature brides on that show than I have on SYTTD.

This is complete crap! Being a 12-14 myself, I find it so hard to shop in regular stores, but I'm not quite in the Lane Bryants either (though I do always admire the clothes as I walk by!). I've found that the only places I have regular luck are Old Navy and Target- good thing I don't have fancy tastes!

My several bridesmaid dress shopping experiences have been less than thrilled and while I adore wedding dresses, I also secretly dread it! Which show would I qualify for, or will be there another one for girls like me?!

I agree. I don't think there should be a separate show for SYTTD. I don't see why they can't put in full-figured brides along with the skinny minis in the original show. It's only fair.

I saw one episode of SYTTD where the bride freaked out because the sale associate brought her the wrong size dress. The associate had to tell her that wedding dresses tend to run a size or two bigger and that she in fact would fit into this dress. The bride wasn't happy. She was like a size 6 and had to wear a size 8. Relax bride!

I used to enjoy watching SYTTD..sadly no longer. There were some great episodes that did have people from all walks of life - and some of the girls really touched me and gave me hope as a plus sized bride - something I swore I would never be because I wanted to be beautiful - yeah..I still am and was and rocked my dress :)

I also hate the seperation - there really is no need. It's just another way to make money imo - and it does feel condascending to me. Even if I was thinner I would feel the same way..everyone is unique and deserves to feel special and beautiful no matter what.

I think "Say Yes to the Dress" is stupid anyway (although I do admit to watching it sometimes). I think it's really sh*tty to give plus-sized women a separate show. It feels exploitative to me.

Maybe I'm just bitter because I won't be getting my dress at Kleinfeld's.

I haven't caught any episodes of this, but I agree with the overriding sentiment in this thread.  A wedding dress is a wedding dress.  We don't need a seperate show for slightly larger ones.

    Agree with everyone.

Sadly, TV shows are usually in the business of ratings, not making the world a better place (or even just keeping it at the same level of good).

ETA: Andplusalso, I'm into that show for the dresses only. I'm also a fan of Project Runway. I find it much more interesting when these shows find something that's crazy flattering on a particular woman's figure, no matter her size, not just something that looks pretty on a super skinny person who'd look good in almost anything.
