"Found" as in he left it on the counter and you mistook it for your cell phone bill? Or "found" as in you were snooping?

If it's the former, then he's being careless with his secret, but don't let it get to your head because it might not be what you think it is, and even if it is, you might not find out for a looooong time - there are girls on this board whose significant others held onto the ring for close to (or over) a year before proposing!

If you were snooping, then shame on you!

Yeah, I completely agree with Cate.
And besides the fact that some people hold onto the ring for a while... it could be a gift for some other reason.

Either way, relax a bit. It's definitely an exciting time, but don't obsess over it right now.

Completely agree.

OP, regardless of the way you found the statement, please please please don't bring it up to FI. He is probably hoping for this to be a big surprise and if he knows you know, he will probably be REALLY pissed (especially if you found it by snooping) and may delay the proposal.

Also, it's possible he may have bought you some nice non-engagement jewelry or something along those lines. Let's not get TOO excited over something that may not be true.

In all seriousness, though. Try to remain calm. It may or may not be an engagement ring. If it is, wonderful! But if it's not, it's best not to get yourself all worked up.

Also, even if it IS an engagement ring, you have no idea when he might propose. It could be tomorrow, or it could be a year from now. You never know. We've seen all different kinds of timelines around this here forum.

Don't tell him you found the receipt. Just let him do this the way he wants. Don't pressure him, don't expect every date night to be IT. Enjoy your relationship as it is right now, because this anticipation is wonderful and will never happen again. Convince yourself to forget about that receipt, and just enjoy being in love. Things will happen in their own time.

If he bought his mom a tennis bracelet, he probably also bought cufflinks for his dad and earrings for his sister.

Mum's the word dear. Calm down. There's a girl around here whose FI left the ring in plain sight on their dresser for a year. Don't get too excited and burst his bubble. :)

This reminds me of that one movie with Amy Adams....Leap Year? Kinda a crappy movie, but whatever. In the beginning, Amy Adam's friend sees her BF go into some big jewelry store or something and tells her. They both assume it's because he's going to pop the question, so Amy Adams gets REALLY excited when he takes her out for dinner that night.

Turns out he bought her a pair of nice earrings. Rather than being touched by getting some beautiful jewelry from her BF, she became very upset that he didn't propose. (Then she plotted to essentially "trick" him into proposing, but that's another story.)

Moral of the story: Chill out. If he is, in fact, going to propose, great! If not, that's fine as well. Just don't get yourself too worked up when you don't even know what's going to happen. You're just setting yourself up for disappointment.

even "IF" he did purchase a ring, that MAY or MAY NOT be for your left hand...he doesn't have it. It will be at least another 10 years...between ordering, sizing, appraising, insuring, boxing, wrapping...and thats assuming its just tin and glass...you don't wanna know how long it takes to forge metals...mining stones...even longer.

*kidding* of course. (enjoy being happy in your relationship, it was hard for me to be content at one time, but you will never get this time back.)

btw we HAVE ordered our rings, and I know for a fact it will be at least 2 more weeks before they're ready to pick up, but that doesn't mean BF will pick them up then, he can take his sweet time.

The post was rather knee-jerk, hence the excitment.
While I am certainly excited, I understand letting him have his moment and not telling him I saw the bill.
I wasn't snooping to find something, I was just looking at the pile of mail. You are all right, it could be a tennis bracelet for his mother, a diamond encrusted pony, or earrings. While I doubt it is any of those things, I admit you are right.

Smart girl. Our goal was to get you to calm down and not get giddy in front of him, or to get your hopes up in case he doesn't propose soon.

Now that you are calm, you're welcome to join us and stick around. Then, when he does propose, you can come here and scream and get as excited as you want and we will congratulate you over and over again.

Deal?
