Come on Humane Society, really?

I was watching tv this morning, and I saw a commercial by Humane Watch. They somewhat explained that the Humane Society (they've got those terribly sad commercials with Sarah McLaughlin, you know what I mean) really isn't giving out all the money to the places that many people assume they are. From the commercials it looks like, to me anyway, that the majority goes to shelters. WRONG!

This makes me sick. I know you ladies love animals, I do too and figured you all may want to see this before you donate!!!

I would think that by now people would know that they need to do research on any organization before making donations to it. If you go to their web page and click the donate monthly button at the top and read what it says it doesn't say anything about money going to animal shelters.

It sucks their commercials are misleading but people really need to take some responsibility and not just blindly donate to organizations if they aren't sure that they really support what that organization is doing.

The Humane Society near me is total garbage. They euthanized dogs who had people standing in the lobby begging to adopt them, dogs that they said had behavioral problems when it turns out the tests weren't administered properly. The dogs were basically set up to fail & then euthanized. All of the dogs were pits. They also euthanized cats but couldn't give an exact number although there were over 80 that were unaccounted for.

I would never give them a penny.

rdr: Which humane society is that? I've been looking for a good shelter to donate to/volunteer at, and I'd like to avoid researching any ones that people know are awful.

The Sarah MacLachlan commercials are actually for the ASPCA, which is also a little misleading because the name makes you think they cover all of America. Really, they're based in New York. Their shelter is in New York City.

The best thing to do is find a local shelter or rescue group and read up on them. I alternate between my local shelters, Tabby's Place, and the Animal Rescue Foundation.

    Disgusting.

Did you know PETA was trying to petition that all pitbulls currently in shelters be euthanized because if they're adopted, they'll only end up in dogfighting rings? And they feel it's better that these dogs not even get a chance to know a loving home? Ugh.

I want to cry right now. I am a huge pitbull fan; it's terrible that they get such a bad reputation. Recently, the American Temperament Test Society concluded that the pitbull scores an 83.4% passing rate - better than the border collie, which scores a 79.6%. I'm not knocking border collies, but it just goes to show that any breed can be labled as "bad", "dangerous" or "vicious". It's NURTURE not NATURE.

    God, I am furious.

I thought PETA was all about animal rights? Well that's just one more reason for me to despise that group.

I agree 100% with the bolded part. Pitbulls are a very easy breed to train and that's why they are used in dog fighting not because they are naturally vicious animals. Why doesn't PETA advocate for making sure pitbulls are placed with horrible owners who force them into dog fighting. I'm so disgusted that anyone would advocate for killing a dog just because it happens to be a certain breed.

Unfortunately, PETA would rather see animals dead than anything else. You know when they "liberate" animals from testing facilities, they euthanize them? They're so fake. I would never support PETA in any way.

Bside -- I hear you on ALL of that. Lucy is a full pittie & she's an amazing dog. She's not aggressive or vicious AT ALL. She's better behaved than any dog I've ever met in my life. My aunt has a Bijon who attacks men & her English Bulldog tried to attack Lucy. Small dogs make me nervous TBH.

I think breed bans are stupid and pointless. Like PPs have said, pits don't do any worse than other dogs on the temperment scale, and actually do better than some.

My big baby mutt is a pit mixed with lab and perhaps rottweiler. She's weary about new people but usually warms up to them quickly and tries to use them as a couch. She lives with my parents and it takes a couple of visits before she loves someone... whenever BF comes over she likes to sit on the couch right next to him. She's as big as he is so it makes for some funny photos.

Everyone asks if Polly, BF & I's adopted pup, is a pit puppy because she has the black/brindle coloring and has a stocky muscular little body with very short hair. I just say she's a mutt, because we have no clue what's in her. Maybe some dachshund and jack russell? She's full grown and less than 20 lbs. and she LOVES LOVES LOVESSSSSS people, any people. If anyone comes over she likes to run circles around their ankles while wiggling and wagging her tail at the speed of sound, then rolling on her back and peeing a little before trying to jump into their arms to be picked up. We say if someone tried to rob us she would annoy them until they left.

I never knew that about PETA. Wow, I never thought they'd be for euthanizing animals. I mean, regardless if you think it's right or wrong, I never thought PETA would be for it, ya know?

In the months I worked at the kennel, I never encountered a single pit that wasn't sweet and good natured. Strong and jumpy, yes. But never aggressive. I had trouble with dachsunds, English bulldogs, Eskimo dogs and once a Rhodesian Ridgeback, but not pitbulls. We actually weren't allowed to call them pitbulls though. We had to call them "American Staffordshire Terriers".

I HATE PETA and think they should be shipped to intolerance island with the crazy closed-minded groups. They claim to be all for animal rights but they have some seriously shady practices to try to prove a point.

I'm a few miles from LHS, in the downtown area. Funny... that's pretty close neighbors as far as TK goes! I've lived here for a year now (has it really been that long???) Sheesh.
