Programs or program board?

I'm debating between programs for all or a poster board with the program on it.  Thoughts? Opinions? Pros and cons?

Re: Programs or program board?

  • If I had to pick between the to I'd say I like the boards better.  I've never really considered programs as a necessity.  Most wedding are about the same.  Who cares if your not exactly sure what's going to happen next, its not like your there for 3 hours. BUT there are some people who want to know so the board covers both types of people.  Plus the board is a lot cheaper and you can have more fun decorating them.

  • I wouldn't do the board...because I think that no one will really look at it.

You don't have to do programs at all if you don't want to.  If you do I would just make as many as invitations sent (so one per family).  I used cardstock, created the program in publisher, then folded it in half...nothing fancy and it cost me $5.

  • Here is what I'm thinking right now.  I'm thinking most people won't really care if they have something to look at during the ceremony.

    Programs pros
    fun to design
have one to keep for a scrapbook
we can put our readings, aknowledgements and loving memory page in it
might help guests from getting bored if this thing starts dragging on.

    cons
most will get tossed which seems like a waste
knowing how I go overboard on DYI they might get pricey

    Program board pros
    Quick and easy to make
helps me resist the urge to beg my bridesmaids to put one on every chair and thus preventing an early death ;)

    cons
won't have anything to put in my scrapbook
    probably won't get read....

  • OP, TRUST ME, I was an anal bride.  I LOVE DIY projects and everything wedding.

My original program was something fancy but because I had to wait until the week of the wedding to print them off (to confirm program with our officiant and music with musicians) I didn't have time which is when I just folded them half and didn't add anything to it.  As the wedding gets closer, especially like week of close, there are some things you will just not care as much about.  You may not believe me now, I know I wouldn't, but I guarantee it.

But if the board is something you would really prefer to do I would have photographer take a picture of it, then it does get "scrap booked".

IMHO, programs (or program boards) are unnecessary, unless you are marrying in a complicated ceremony that will leave 50% or more of your guests completely confused.  Again, just my opinion.
  • I like programs when they have word games or mazes on them, but otherwise I don't care one way or the other about them.

  • Thanks for your thoughts ladies!  That gives me a few things more to consider.  I think I will put it on the bottom of my list and see how much time I have after I complete some of the more necessary projects I have going.
  • If it's in a church, the programs really help people unfamiliar with the rituals/responses get through it without feeling uncomfortable.
