The Fat Picture... AHHHH!!!

So, I knew I had gained quite a bit of weight the last few months...but it didn't hit me until my co-workers were showing me pictures from Wednesday's going away party.  I seriously became sick to my stomach when I seen myself in these pictures!!  I have no idea how I let myself get THIS bad.  I've decided that I'm going to use these pictures as my "motivation".  I really want to lose at least 30 pounds by our wedding in October.  I've always been a very fit and healthy eating person in the past, so I know I just need to get back into that routine...  Anyone have any great weight losing suggestions?!

I had that moment too. I was looking through some facebook pictures from college and then pictures from New Years. I was shocked. FI and I have started P90X. It's not cheap to get started and it's intense but I really feel like I'm doing something that will get results. I used to walk for miles but I was never sore after. To me, slightly sore = working out. This is only our first week of it but so far so good. Yesterday was Yoga and my shoulders and abs are nice and sore today!

I actually have the regular P90 that I am planning on starting back up after the move - when I can FINALLY have a real routine....  I did it once before and that thing KICKS YOUR BUTT!!

Jeter - I go to the Getting in Shape board on here.  Those girls know their stuff!  I'd suggest tracking calories on dailyplate.com or sparkpeople.com as well.  It's really helpful.  We're also doing the 100 pushup challenge over there.

Good luck girl, keep us posted:)

I didn't realize there was a P90...wish I did! I don't know that I'm really ready for extreme but we just do what we can for now and take breaks. The good thing is that we won't do anything we can't do and talked about it before starting. FI has a pretty physical job and can't be too sore or he won't be able to do his job. So far so good!

For me no matter what kind of program I do just being able to find a routine has always been the key. Any time I can plan ahead enough to prepare all or most of my food for the week has been a success. I haven't had much of that lately so I'm in the same boat as you, cringing at pictures.

KD - Yeah, the regular P90 isn't AS hardcore as P90X..  I do the same thing - when I first start it, I only do the parts that I can until I've built up enough tolerance to be able to do it all.  I've learned the lesson of doing too much the hard way..!  How long have you and FI been doing it?  Good luck!

And yes Button...routine is EVERYTHING!  I think that's one of the main reasons I've ended up this way - because my routine has gotten completely out of whack.. Ugh!

We started Monday. Not too far into it but we both really like it. It might be harder when I go back to work (been on break all week) but this has been a good way for me to start it. Now that I know how good I feel after doing it, I'll be more likely to do it when I'm tired after a long day of work.

Button: That's what FI has had to start doing, packing up his food for the day and it helps.  Before we lived together he would just buy lunch every day and I never even knew about it. When we first moved in he brought food but stopped after a while because it was easier to get food on the road. Now that we're starting to merge finances I saw how much he spent. Ridiculous, beside the fact that it's terrible for him! He's been bringing his lunch again for a couple weeks and he told me yesterday that he feels so much better now that he's eating sandwiches and apples as opposed to fast food.

I had that same experience.  Back in Sept. I stepped on a scale for the first time in forever, and I was dangerously close to a number I thought I'd never see.  I made up my mind then that I *wouldn't* ever see it.  Since then, I've lost over 40lbs, and am back to where I want to be weight-wise.

I did it pretty simply.  I used sparkpeople.com and the daily plate.com to estimate how many calories I should be eating every day.  Both sites have "food journals" where you can track your food.  (Personally, I think the daily plate has a better database, there's less that I have to input myself.  But sparkpeople has awesomely supportive community boards).

I tracked calories for 4 months.  I used Cooking Light recipes a LOT to find healthy versions of foods I loved. And I exercised 5-6 days/wk.  It was tough at first to keep the routine going, but after a month, I actually looked forward to going to the gym.  I've since gotten hooked on running, and am running some races in the next couple months.  Oh, and I found a few different friends to be active with.  It kept me accountable and made it more fun!

I really believe that if you really want to do it, you can.  Don't just do it for your wedding though... once the wedding's over, where's the motivation? Do it for you, so that you can live a long and happy life with your FI :-)

That's a good reminder. The wedding was my kick in the pants but I can't just stop when it's over. Thanks for the advice (even though I know you meant it for Jeter!).

The best thing that works for me is joining a gym and going to the classes. I was in the best shape when I did a combo of Pilates and Cardio Stepping several times a week.

I need to get back into pilates. I can't shake these last couple pounds.

I did the same thing. I have photos from my SIL's graduation and was like.... no. Time to diet, I used calorie counter at about.com, stopped drinking Starbucks and ate a LOT of kashi. I'm down 10lbs and am annoyed that I am plateaued right now. My boxing coach is working on that though.

I cut back on Starbucks... there's no way I could cut it out entirely. Luckily, my usual drink is *only* (ha!) 200 calories, so if I have one it becomes my sweet treat for the day.

Oh yes, I'm definitly not doing it JUST for the wedding.  I'm doing it for ME and to feel better about myself.  But, I do want to lose it before the wedding because I don't want to look back on the wedding photos and be disguisted with myself...

And dieting really isn't what's killing me - I tend to eat fairly well but the exercise is what I REALLY need...

hetshup - You do regular boxing??  That would be SOOO fun!!  After I get back into shape I'd love to do something like that!

I am about to graduate from college and am at my heavies point ever. I almost cry everytime I go to the Dr and he to get on the scale.

I am going to be starting the 30 day shred and try to keep up with that and 3-5 mile walks a couple times a week. I know that I am going to be getting into a new routine when I move home and start my job (Boss just called me to confirm my start date Laughing)  and I am hoping to be able to make this workout part of my daily routine.

Yep, there's a guy that i work with that was a golden gloves champion. He just likes to teach people to box. So I do that 2-3 times a week, and yes, he'll make me get on that stair climber with a sweatshirt on. I've stopped losing weight, but I have a lot more arm tone and am putting on muscle. I really like it, but you have to be ok with having bruised knuckles most of the time.

I have fat pictures, only at the time I didn't realize that I had gained 20 pounds. I know... how do you not realize that? Now I look back at those photos and am thankful I lost the 20 pounds and don't look like that anymore.

Good luck with your weight loss journey.

My tip: reduce your alcohol intake. (that is if you drink enough to make a difference.) When I pretty much stop drinking I definitely lose a few pounds.

That sounds awesome hetshup - and I'm not scared of bruised and bloody knuckles!

loopy - I actually do know what that's like - I knew I had gained some weight but I swear seeing that picture just knocked me over the edge - I had NO idea I had gained that much weight.  And as far as giving up alcohol - that is going to be tough for me LOL

My favorite is the drama queen smiley. That's awesome!

ETA: I know that cutting out/ drastically back on alcohol can be difficult. I go in spurts. I find that if I drink wine or beer I tend to drink less than if I have mixed drinks.

I thought being a drama queen would be appropriate here.  And in all seriousness, I am happy to be gaining the correct amount of weight.  I would rather have a chunky, healthy baby and for me to have to lose some weight after the birth than to have an underweight kiddo.

I will be coming to you ladies for advice in about 7 months.  I don't think you are actually allowed to diet or do major exercise right after giving birth.  I do already have some 'maternal' fitness books.  One claims to get rid of 'Mummy Tummy.'

Kick some ass ladies!  (I won't say good luck, because I don't think luck has anything to do with it.)

Mutley I remember once you said you were known for your abs. Were you fit just because of the sports you played or did you have an additional fitness routine?

I did Pilates and had an ab routine.  Plus I did a fair amount of cardio.  Some people have abs but they are hidden under fat, so they need the cardio.  Doing an ab routine will do nothing if you are not doing cardio because you cannot lose from one specific spot.
Also, some ab routines will actually make you gain around your middle due to building too much muscle in the wrong places.

I am hoping that my ab days are not long gone.  The 'Mummy Tummy' book has a pre-cursor for maternity!

If you follow this you will loose approx 5 lbs/week

Keep a journal of everything you eat.  You need to have:
    Breakfast, Snack, Lunch, Snack, Dinner
    Have 2 starch, 2 Fruit, 3 Veggies, 2 Protein, 1 serv. 8oz. of Dairy, 2 Tsp Fat

You can keep a tally of how many of each you have-just make sure you cover all of them.

I would suggest 10-15 8oz glasses of water/day as well!!! Keep a water bottle with you. Careful of juice-1 8oz glass of OJ is equal to 6 oranges!

Only have red meat once a week, and no more white bread!!

You dont have to go hard core on working out.. just make sure you are walking as much as you can!! Cardio Cardio Cardio!   Good luck

FI and I just started talking Alli - the diet aid - along with completely changing our eating habits for the better - and though on my work days i walk 4-5 miles between actual work time and walking to and from work - have also been doing more regular excercice. I see the changes already in the last 2 weeks , i just FEEL better , more energy , i feel healthier again and feel motivated to keep sticking to better eating and lifestyle habits. I've heard great things about P90X - friends are doing it and love it. FI and I are looking into it soon too. I'm starting wedding dress shopping in June and hope to lose 10 lbs before then , starting slow lol. But in all seriousness just balance your life with good eating and activities and excercise thats fun and you should do fine ;)

I've come up with some great on the spot lowfat recipies that even FI loves - i can always send them off if anyone wants them too ;)

It is NOT safe to lose that much per week.  It is also not likely that anyone will keep that sort of weight loss permanently.
In any sort of program, you should only be losing 1-2 lbs a week.

That's not really a healthy pace, the faster you lose weight the easier it is to gain it back. Nutritionists recommend losing approx 2 lbs/week.
