Recommendation: Nook vs Kindle

I know I have seen posts on here talking about the e-readers and several of you have them. I'm trying to make a decision on which one I like better. So some questions for you ladies:
Which one do you have?
What features do you like about it?
Would you recommend it?

    Which one do you have?

I have the first generation nook, so the black and white version.  Which I like because it looks like the pages of a book so my eyes don't get tired from the backlit screen.

What features do you like about it?

I like th inviable ink technology, the way the words disappear and reappear when turning pages.  Mine has wi-fi so I can  surf the net when near a wi-fi source or I can download books anywhere as long as there is a 3G signal.  So if I finish a book at the beach I can download another one, so on if I'm in a car.  The battery life lasts pretty long if I put it in airplane mode.  Its about the size of a hardcover book and has an SD expansion slot.  I bought an 8 gig card on sale and put it in there.  I also like the screen save option.  I uploaded pictures of FI and I onto it so it rotates through the images.  Since the Nook Color came out the price dropped I think it starts at $149 now.  There are thousands upon thousands of titles and so many of them are free.

    Would you recommend it?

I would totally recommend it.  Especially if you go through books like crazy.

I have been considering one for a long time for text books. I have an English class this summer and it would be so nice to read it on that instead of having 9 books. The problems I see for me though is you don't know your page number and it will be hard to flip back to it when writing papers later on. I will probably get one after I graduate though.

My mom and sister both have the Kindle and they love it. They have a water/sand proof case too for the beach and pool.

grrr TK ate my post..i'm just going to say it again incase.

i have a kindle and i am completely addicted. i highly recommend it, it doesn't hurt my eyes at all. the only downside though is that it doesn't have a backlight so you can read in a dark room (unless i'm a complete idiot and mistaken). not sure of the price though cause BF's parents got it for me for christmas. oh and i literally read like 3 books before having to charge it.

    Which one do you have?
I have the Kobo from Borders (the one without wifi which was not important to us).

What features do you like about it?
The cost (it was only $80). It takes a SD card so you can expand the memory. It can read both e-pub and pdf formatted books so you are not limited to buying books from one site.

    Would you recommend it?
For only $80, yes I would recommend it.

Kindle App for Android (too broke for a real one)

I like that nothing gets saved on my phone, I sign in to Amazon, and the books are available.

    For free, yes.

See that was my main concern. A lot of things online say that it doesn't have a fantastic battery life, but they don't really define how long it lasts. Do you charge it like you would a phone? I also like that you can expand the memory.

I have a Kindle and I looove it. It has text-to-speech in some books (more of the newer, more popular ones), I find the book prices very reasonable (tons of free ones too) and it's just so easy to use. It isn't backlit either which is great. I rarely have to charge it, and I read probably every day. I have a Blackberry which I charge every night, and an iPod that I charge probably once a week. My Kindle needs to be charged less than that.

The no backlight is amazing because it looks like I'm reading a regular book. But as PP mentioned, you can't read in the dark without a light, but a lot of the covers come with an attached book light too. Either way, it really isn't a problem for me at all.

Ditto PP who suggested getting apps for your smartphone or your iPod touch. I have both nook and Kindle apps on my touch, and I love that it's such a small, portable size, and I can watch movies, listen to music, play Sudoku, whatever on the same device.

I just got a kindle 2 weeks ago, I debated for awhile because i liked the idea of holding a book, but I love my kindle.  So far I haven't had to charge it.  I love the fact that it isn't back lit either.  There are so many books available and so many for free.  I was undecided on a nook versus the kindle before I decided on the kindle. I went to best buy and found the kindle easier to navigate too.

BF got me a Kindle for our anniversary last year and it's pretty awesome. I use it mainly for my PDF articles in school, so I don't have to print out 30 pages a class.

If getting free e-books through your local library is important, check with them because as others have already mentioned there are usually very little or no Kindle compatible e-books through public libraries. If I ever went with an e-reader, I would go with a Nook for that reason. My local library doesn't have any Kindle compatible e-books.

    Thanks for all the info!
They both seem great. Right now I am swaying towards the nook because I just found out that my public library has a ebook section with a larger selection that is compatible with the nook but not the kindle. The fact that I can get lots of books for free is kind of persuasive.

I also have the black & white Nook and I completely agree with the above. I also want to add that the Nook allows you to download library books onto it, which was the big selling point for me. I don't like spending money on books I'll read once and then just put in a bookshelf, so I wanted to continue reading books for free.

<div>Yeah I was looking at the type of downloads my local library has online. They had a small database of kindle compatible ebooks and a large database of nook compatible ebooks. That in itself is making me want the nook. They are pretty similar on most things and I can deal with having to charge the nook every 10 days. That is not bad compared to my computer, cellphone or ipod.</div>

I charge it like once a week, but that's because I read like crazy, I read when I come home, I read before read, I read in the morning on the weekends, I read in the car when FI and I go on road trips.

I use both the nook app for android and the nook app for my apple. The page gets saved through amazon, so I'm not lost when I switch back and forth. I want a real nook though... however, I was thinking... If I am going to spend $250 for a nook, why not save up and spend $500 to get an ipad. Humph. I don't have that kind of money, and am just sticking with my free apps for now.

The only thing about the ipad is they have a similar screen to computers. So that would still hurt my eyes after a while.

As I agree free is better, staring at the screen of my iPhone or Andriod to read is like reading my computer screen, the backlit will kill my eyes.  iPads are like tablet laptops, its just a very expensive one.  To each their own.  I wouldn't buy the color Nook, the black and white one is $149 for wi-fi and $199 for wi-fi/3G.  I saw the Kindle at Staples the other day and it looks great as well.  I'm just a B&N whoar so there you have it.

I tried to do this with my laptop last semester but the crazy English teacher went on a rant and about how she said PRINTED OUT!!! Biitch, that's about 450 pages of paper and ink. Are you going to buy me some ink!?!! She was crazy, I did every homework assignment and research paper while FI only did the research paper (and did a shiity job)- We both got a B+...WTFBBQ?!!

Back to the thread- I had the nook app until my teacher (same as above) said she wanted us to buy the actual book to put notes in it. If I could get all of my books on one, I'd consider getting one but a lot of my textbooks haven't been put on, last I checked.

FI bribed a guy from work with a Kindle and he loves it.
