Office etiquette

This is annoying me so much I just have to tell someone.

This guy next to me in my office is literally sneezing once every five seconds. Then he proceeds to sniffle sniffle sniffle sniffle. Ok, I understand if you're sick and you can't help it. But at least take some medicine or blow your nose? Or don't come in to work?

On top of that, this same guy's phone has been ringing, LOUDLY, every few minutes. And he proceeds to answer it and talk on it.

My office is the quietest place on earth so things like this really make it hard to concentrate. Ack.

Do your officemates have annoying habits?

We had one of those whose cubicle was on the other side of mine. This guy would talk on his cell phone CONSTANTLY. I knew about his whole life (90% of which I'd consider TMI. ie- mail order bride, enough said.) He had the most obnoxious ringer ever. The day he was "transferred" to my office, he took one of the chairs out of our hearing room as his own. He had a standup fan, coffee maker, tv, and I'm pretty sure he had a microwave in his cubicle.

Now my office is insanely quiet and I love it.

I gotta say, I was sick a few weeks ago and was sniffling and felt SO bad about it!  We don't even have cubicles, so all my colleagues had to watch me blowing my nose every 2 minutes and sneezing.  I did keep it contained, but I went through a box of tissues and Lysol wipes in about a day.  The following day I was feeling the same so I just stayed home because I felt so bad subjecting them all to my grossness.

As far as my own pet peeves - you don't eat someone else's food in the fridge.  NO!  Bad!  Don't touch!!!!  That's MY Jello chocolate pudding snack, damnit!

Haha, in lab we had a rule that we could kick you out if you were sick.  It was a great rule.  We'd also report each other to the boss to make her kick someone else out.

I also send students home if they're too sick.

    I'm the culprit in my
office when it comes to the sniffles this week. Sealed I feel terrible about it, but sometimes it doesn't matter how much your blow your nose...it's not gonna stop!

I do feel your pain with the phone though. I personally would ask him to put it on silent. At least then you wouldn't have to listen to it. I am actually in an office, but my neighbor and I share a WALL and I can still hear him through it! He is originally from Venezuela and speaks very loudly in Spanish. He thinks he's getting away with talking to friends because he's speaking in another language...but i'm pretty sure everyone knows he's not working in there...

I keep my phone on silent, or a setting that makes a really soft beep when I'm in the office.
Every once in awhile, I'll forget to fix it, I'll get an early morning text message, and everyone gets to hear "Jetson's doorbell."  Never more than once, though.

I get annoyed when people leave stuff in the fridge until it grows.  That's freakin gross.

This morning some people were being really lout out in the hallway, and then someone was playing with the foosball table. I had to shut the door of my office, not that it helped much.

At the last company I worked, many of the people weren't from the US, and they would just yell for someone halfway across the floor. I certainly don't miss all the shouting.

My one co-worker talks non-stop all day long. If she isn't talking to someone (who usually is trying to tune her out), she saying each step of her work. For example, "File. Open. Open blank folder. Open blank document. Edit. Paste. Saying out loud what I'm writing."

It drives me up a wall and makes it impossible to concentrate on things. But if you talk while she's trying to count money (even if you're answering the business phone), watch out! *rolls eyes* When ever possible I avoid working in the back office or take my work to the community room when it isn't booked for a program. I feel sorry for the librarians who can't do the same.

Nope!  But my chocolate pudding stopped getting taken at least.  I told everyone that I was going to inject blue food dye so that the thief's mouth would turn blue.  I was actually going to do it, too, but luckily they got the hint.

I work in such a small office and everyone's really close, so it's particularly offensive when someone takes your food because we all know each other and spend time together every day.  It feels a lot less personal if the thief might not be someone I interact with socially on a daily basis.

Other pet peeve?  Correcting my Spanish as soon as I get off a call.  Yep, usually it's a very good suggestion and the intentions of my coworkers are good, but it makes me massively paranoid on my phone calls that I'm being critiqued for my grammar and pronunciation while I'm talking to clients.  It makes me really hesitant to pick up the phone when anyone else is around!

The problem that I face is not my cubicle neighbors, but a dude that goes to my neighbors and talk non-stop. Most of my coworkers including this dude are Russians and I barely understand Russian, but I can always tell that they are telling the guy to go away, leave them alone, get lost etc.
I'm hoping to take some Russian Classes so I can understand everything. LOL.
