Waah Waah Waah, migraines!

Okay, seriously... this migraine has brought me to tears!

I got my first migraine ever when I was pregnant with my son.  I had them throughout that pregnancy and was put on meds for them (Fioricet).  With my daughter, they came back.  Fioricet didn't work, so they tried some other meds (don't remember the names).  The other meds helped make the headache bearable (I could function instead of being curled up in the fetal position), but didn't make them go away... AND they made me nauseous.  So, my OB gave me percocet.  Yes, percocet.  I was WAY too nervous to take percocet during my pregnancy, so I just asked for some anti-nausea meds and I took the other medication and dealt with the headaches... at least I could function.

Anyway, fast forward two years.

They're BAAAAAAACK!!  I'm not pregnant, but I'm dealing with migraines again.  I went to the doc and she decided to give me Percocet since the other stuff didn't actually get rid of the migraines the last time.

Eleven days ago, I got a migraine.  I tried the Percocet.  It wiped me out, but did nothing for the headache.

It's been eleven days with this headache, light sensitivity and nausea and I can't get rid of it!!  I've tried massive amounts of medication (percocet, 800mg ibuprofin, excedrin migraine) and nothing is knocking it out.

I just called my doc again and left a message.  Hopefully, they'll be able to recommend something that will work.

Anyone BTDT?  What worked for you?

With my one and only migrane (thank GOD!) I used Excedrine Tension Headache and it worked for me. My FMIL has frequent mirganes. She will go to urgent care and they'll give her a shot or an IV to basically knock her out.

The only thing that helps with my (very infrequent) migraines is LOTS of water, sleep in a cool dark room and a cool cloth on my head.  Also, if I know I'm getting one I take some advil and try to sleep before it happens.

You can try and see a chiropractor. My chiro's office has brochures about helping with migraines but I go for back pain.

I'd never even thought about that.  Hmmm... I might have to look into that.  I've heard that my insurance will cover visits.

I second going to see a chiropractor. I used to get intense migraines at least once a week, I tried going to 3 different doctors. One told me to take regular Tylenol, another tried to give me antidepressants, and the third tried to give me a medication that was for high blood pressure. I got fed up with these quacks so my SO suggested that I go to a chiropractor. I went and found out that one of the vertebrae in my neck was pushing on my greater occipital nerve which was causing my headaches/migraines. At first I had to go to the dr once a week now I only go every other month just for a small adjustment.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this.

I get auras with my migraines, so I take aspirin for them.  Despite that, the headache usually lasts 2-3 days.  Definitely talk to your doctor again.  11 days is ridiculous. Also, if you're just talking to a GP, I'd recommend going to a neurologist.  They will be the best specialist to talk to about this.

There are about a million different triggers for migraines (sounds like hormones is one for you).  Try to keep track of what you eat, your stress level, even the weather before you get the headaches to figure out what your triggers are.

one last thing, if you are on combination BCP with estrogen in it, you might want to talk to your doc about getting off of it.  I did, and it made a world of difference.

Be observant about your surroundings. My migraines are triggered by loud noises (like blaring music or a saw) and harsh flourescent lighting, like in a mall. The only thing that helps me is to close my eyes. If possible, to take a nap in a dark room. Pain meds rarely work and the ones I used to take just made me sleepy. It helps to know what your triggers are to avoid them as best possible in the future.

Also, I get migraines if I wear my hair in a ponytail. My hair is heavy and the pressure kills my head. So, no high ponytails for me.

i've had a strange dizziness/lightheaded-ness/buzzing sensation (but not sound) in my head for the past few days.  i used to suffer from migraines before i started wearing glasses, but haven't had one in years... i have no idea what this is and i don't have time to take off for a doctor's appointment for the next few days.

    hope you start feeling better...

I also suffer from migraines. I take a medication called Mersyndol with codeine. I always have to lie down and take a nap when  I take them, but when I wake up I always feel better. Good luck.

I get migraines regularly. : ( I totally can commiserate.

The things that help sometimes: drinking ginger ale or coffee

I usually get them so bad I have to shut myself in a dark room and force myself to fall asleep for a few hours.

I also usually end up vomiting a lot. That usually helps too, even though I hate it.

FWIW, I've never found any meds that help, but I haven't tried any prescriptions. Let me know if you find something that works.

Mine are usually due to hormone changes, so I try to get extra sleep and relaxation around those times when I am most susceptible.

FI's friend used to get migraines frequently since she was 12 years old.  A few years ago, she got LASIK and hasn't had one since.

A friend of mine gets them all the time too and her neurologist (yes, she has them often enough to see a neurologist at least once a month) gives her vicodin, but she said even that just barely curbs the migraine.  (after talking to FI's friend, she is going to try to get her neurologist to 'prescribe' LASIK to see if that will help)

i have been getting constant headaches since semesters started, practically every day at least once or twice a day. i think its because of stress. try stress relieving exercises, like clearing your mind and doing yoga, its been helping me.
