My SO is adopted from Korea...we better not be cousins.

Oh and I have several cousins that are both 2nd and 3rd cousins to me... My grandma and her sister married a nephew and his uncle. Holidays are a fun time to explain. lol

The word "cousin" looks really weird if you stare at it long enough.

I had that problem with the word "color" the other day. I was convinced it was spelled wrong, but it was simply that I'd typed it too much (for whatever reason, the girls on my Month board have decided that's the issue they're going to hang themselves on - they're all stressed out about what colors to choose... ugh!)

Making pulled pork for dinner. The shoulder is currently simmering in barbecue sauce in the crockpot.

My family tree has a branch that circles on itself. Some cousin slept with her dad and had a baby, and the cousin's mom raised it as a sister. What do you call that one?

Elle, can I come too? Dinner here sucked.

So according to my grandmother, back in the day (I'm thinking late 19th-early 20th century) it was okay to marry second or third cousins because it was important to 'keep the land in the family.' Now, I know I live in the south, but to my knowledge at this point, our families didn't really do this. My grandma likes to say weird things to freak us out (like, "I was hanging upsidedown at the gym and I think my intestine slipped up into my stomach." or "I think I might have worms... I'll have to put some tape on my butthole." or if you show her your belly button she'll show you her boobs... she hates belly buttons).

ANYWAY, Interestingly enough, my mother's mother's cousin married my father's mother's best friend. Because we always called them aunt and uncle, and didn't exactly realize that she was not blood related to my father's mother, we had a little 'OMG INBREEDING' moment.

My point in posting is that for a long long time, royal families wanted to keep the crown IN THE FAMILY so they resorted to marrying cousins. For royals, marriages were business arrangements too. It's not like that anymore, I'm pretty sure, but for example: The only thing Princess Diana got to pick out was her engagement ring. Her Wedding Party consisted of people she did not even know.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Things that are better left unsaid : Is there even such a thing as someone you're not related to, though? I mean, whether you believe in evolution or creation, you'll still follow the basic theory of a common ancestor. I'm distantly related to everyone including all of you bitches. Seriously, 14th cousin? That's as close to unrelated as you can get. You have to go back a looooot of generations (15 in fact) to find that common bond.
