Ushers?

Do we need ushers?  We are not having people sit on his or her side of the church so do we really need them?

Re: Ushers?

  • You probably don't need them, and I have only been formally seated by an usher at about 1 out of 10 of the weddings I attend.

If you want a formal atmosphere, I'd recommend ushers.

If you have a complicated ceremony, you probably need programs, and you need a way to make sure everyone gets them. Having ushers pass them out is the surest way, but a prominent basket and sign might work too.
  • We are having 5 for our ourdoor wedding. Two by the valet station to basically just make sure everyone finds the site ok, and then three to physically take people to their seats. This worked best for our venue, but technically, no, you don't need ushers.
  • Our ushers walked our moms down the aisle and stood at the doorway to great our guests. They didn't seat anyone.  One of my ushers (FBIL) was "my man on the outside"- he look care of everything we couldn't like pay the bag piper, made sure the tables were set up correctly etc.

Our groomsmen are just going to do usher duty before the ceremony. They also won't be escorting anyone to their seats either. I guess they're more like greeters who'll tell people to sit wherever they want
