Not Engaged Yet

so... someone needs to tell me how to do this! PIP

we are starting the process of resetting my heirloom ring!

we don't wear jewelry, so i have NO IDEA what kind of questions to ask, what terms means, etc.  so i need tips/advice.  i know i've briefly asked some questions before, but now we're starting to actually make some concrete plans with the jeweler.

we are taking this ring, and having the set redone exactly the same only not in yellow gold.  i was thinking either the white gold (yellow+palladium, they don't use nickel) or rose gold...  OR... is there anyway to kind of mix the rose and white gold?  has anyone seen this done?  i've never seen it, but in my imagination it looks pretty.  ;)

for the wedding band i was thinking something like this:
http://www.turtleloveco.com/Tiny_Hammered_Silver_Wedding_Ring_p/mg-thb-0.htm

http://www.etsy.com/listing/52111101/every-day-jewelry-14k-gold-twist-stacked?ref=sr_gallery_6&ga_search_query=twisted+wedding+band&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_page=&order=&includes[0]=tags&includes[1]=title

http://www.etsy.com/listing/48256496/recycled-twisted-sterling-silver-ring?ref=sr_gallery_13&ga_search_query=twisted+wedding+band&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_page=&order=&includes[0]=tags&includes[1]=title

http://www.etsy.com/listing/41097227/slender-yellow-gold-ring-of-twisted-and?ref=sr_gallery_17&ga_search_query=twisted+wedding+band&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_page=2&order=&includes[0]=tags&includes[1]=title

would this idea

work?  how do the wedding band and the e-ring fit together?  are there certain shapes that you have to get to fit the e-ring?

my dad said he thinks it will take about 2 weeks and cost anywhere between $800-$1500 for the reset, and maybe $500 for the wedding band.  it's at a big-name jeweler here in the city...  can i get the wedding ring done by somewhere else and it come out okay?  will the metals clash if i do that?  will it mess up the insurance?

it's the same place my parents got their rings from and they love the jeweler.  we also have a family friend who handles my parents' rings/watches and is going to handle mine.  so i feel okay about letting them have the diamonds, insurance, etc.  do i want to insure only with the jeweler?  my mom doesn't have her ring insured at all, or if she does only with the jeweler.  when i mentioned to her about getting it appraised and having it added to my homeowner's policy, she didn't know what i was talking about... eep!

i try to ask these questions to the jeweler, but i get so confused when there are so many answers flying at me and i've never dealt with jewelry before in my life.

thanks in advance!

That ring looks HUGE on your finger! Those stones are beautiful...anyway.

I can't really read some of your post, because the ads on the side are cutting it off...but I think that with the wedding bands you are considering you will have a little gap between your rings (which I love, but some people don't). I love the wedding bands you are considering they are so gorgeous. I think the set will look really nice.

    Hi Lindsay,

Is there anything wrong with the original setting or do you just not like the yellow gold? If it's just the color, you can have the ring Rhodium plated. My local jeweler said he could do that to my yellow gold birthstone ring for about $50. You would have to get it re-done every so often as the plating wears off, but it's not expensive.

Those bands are pretty. They'd probably sit at a slight gap, as they'll run into the largest stone of the e-ring. You could also ask a jeweler to make a custom band that was contoured to the e-ring.

    Your doggie is adorable!

i've heard that you're supposed to like weld them together or something??  is that true?  does the wedding band go on the inside (closer to your palm) or the outside?

thank you.  it belonged to my great-great-aunt who passed away many years ago, before i was born.  my great-great-uncle, who practically raised my dad, gave it to him to give to me.  i'm so excited to have it.  my g-g-uncle passed away 2 or 3 years ago, and he also left me a few pieces of furniture.  it is very special to me to have these reminders of family that have already passed on.  my g-g-aunt and g-g-uncle truly loved each other, and i'm so excited to have her ring.  i hope that our love and marriage (BF and myself) reflects the same depth and committment that theirs did.  i cried the first time i put it on.  i can't wait until it's really mine.  eeee!  :)

i just don't like yellow gold.  and i told BF that he could give it to me as it was, and later we could get it reset.  he had the omney saved up, but due to a family problem he ended up using it to pay a debt that one of his cousins incurred in his name.  grrrr.  apparently he and my dad worked out a deal so that way he could go ahead and propose with the ring as we originally wanted it.  i just found this out.

and we asked about the rhodium plating, but we (BF and i) decided that we'd rather just get it reset completely and be done with it.  my parents (who are the ones technically giving me the ring to have) also preferred that, as did our jeweler.

Yeah, some people solder (sp?) their rings together...that's an option.

The wedding band is supposed to go on the inside (closest to your heart and the ering is on the outside)

That's so sweet that you were given that ring! It's beautiful.

if i get it contoured, does that mean it becomes part of the ring?  or is it still 2 separate parts?

i think i'd like to keep it just a band that slides on, in case we travel somewhere and i want to wear the inexpensive band by itself and leave the ring locked up.  it has so much sentimental value that i would be devastated if i lost it or it got stolen.

but i really don't know.  maybe they'll have some sample bands i can try on with the ring to get a feel for it.  i would think so... ??

what are some questions that i should ask the jeweler?  anything that i should know to watch out for?

A contoured band would still be it's own band.  But on it's own it might look a little strange (without the e-ring.)  It's kind of like this. -clicky- That would be for a square ring. A jeweler might be able to make one form to your e-ring. You don't HAVE to get the soldered either.

Edit: to fix the stupid link.

From what I know, getting a contoured (curved) band just makes the wband sit flush with the ering...but they are still two separate parts. But when you don't wear the ering and you wear the wband alone it is going to be curved...some people don't like that.

whether or not you reset it you will have to get the rhodium implating done every so often so you realy won't "be done with it"

Since she hasn't come to answer this...I'm gonna go with you will have to go back and get it done every so often because it will wear off. I hear in some places it's only 50.00 to do and it's not that often so that might be worth it.

okay, so you only have to have it redone if you have it dipped in the rhodium, but if i go with white gold or rose gold i will not have to have it redone?  :)  thanks!

White gold will have to be replated every 2-3 years, depending on how particular you are about the shade of white (it will start to yellow after awhile).  My Mom goes every 5-6 years for her anniversary band as she doesn't really care about the tone of the white gold.  You can turn a yellow gold setting into a white gold setting by having it rhodium plated, too.  Same deal.

I don't know much about rose gold - Hetshup would probably be better to answer that as she has a rose gold wedding ring (which she's about to be wearing in just a few days...!!!)

Platinum and pallidum are the ones you don't have to have replated.

When you say re-set, you mean you want a different setting using the same stones, or mimicing the original setting in new metal?  If the first, then you just look at settings at jewelry stores and let them know you already have the diamonds.  When you find a setting you like, be sure to have the diamonds appraised and measured and photographed by another jeweler so you can ensure that the store doing the new setting doesn't switch stones on you (let them know you did this, so they don't try any funny business to begin with).  This is what we're doing as I'm using the diamond from my great-grandma's ring, but a completely new setting.

If you want to mimic the original setting, get it custom done.  Talk to girls who have done it - go on your local board and ask for recommendations (and see pictures of the finished work - one girl I know here had her ring custom made and it looks kind of shoddy, but I know others like Kat and Sunbird have absolutely stunning rings that were custom made).

No you will still have to have it re-dipped.  Even white gold is plated with rhodium.  Unless you don't mind when it turns a dull grayish-yellow color.

Even platinum (and possibly palladium) need to be polished every year or so.  Those metals will get dull and gray looking as well.
