Non-traditional handfasting

DH and I are planning on doing a handfasting ceremony for our vow renewal. Since this will not be a legal ceremony we obviously don't need an officiant. I was thinking of having our guests sit in a circle with the two of us in the  middle then very literally tying the knot (we will practice this before hand) with maybe a few spoken words between us. Then having a little background info on handfasting/ what we are doin, etc. on the programs with just some music playing in the background. It makes sense in my head. I'm just unsure of how to get it to flow without someone officially adressing our guests.

Re: Non-traditional handfasting

  • I think you do need someone to speak and do the handfasting (I'm pretty sure a third pair of hands is necessary for that) but they don't need to be someone that can legally perform marriage ceremonies since yours isn't. There's at least one poster around here that had a handfasting, but I can't remember her name. Anyway, I would ask a friend who understands the ceremony to perform it.
