HELP-double booked!

My fiance and I just decided to bump our wedding from july 2011 to august 2010 so of course when we found out the venue we wanted had ONE day available in august we jumped on it and went full speed ahead with our wedding plans. Problem is I called yesterday to see how many rooms the motel where we are having our cermony/recption had blocked off for us and was informed that when we went to pay the deposit (3 days ago, well within our 10 days we were told we had to pay the deposit to hold our date) that someone elses name was written in the books for that date and the manager is on vacation until tuesday. I already have paid the deposit for the dj, and booked the photographer and cake maker. My dress is ordered and my bridesmaids have began ordering their dresses! What can I do???

Re: HELP-double booked!

  • Start looking for another location.  Until you have a signed contract, you can't count on them holding it for you.
  • Start looking for another venue.  Perhaps they were in the 10 day grace period too.
  • I'm sorry this happened to you, but the others are probably right.  I hope you're able to work it out.

This is what I mean when I say you don't have a date set until you've booked your venue.
  • Legally speaking you have some possible long shot options, but I can't advise you since you're in a different state and I'm not retained.  If it's that important to you, hire an attorney and tell them that a merchant gave you a 10 day grace period to hire them, for a contract/lease that is less than 1 year away, and you paid deposits in reasonable reliance on that guarantee.  Honestly though, going the legal route will likely cost you more money and hassle than it's worth, so yes, start looking for other options instead.  Next time, don't pay deposits to smaller vendors until you have the venue nailed down first.  Good luck!

I kind of have to disagree with that last statement. We set our date before we booked our venue. But it worked out for us. Our date is significant. We wanted a specific date and found a venue based on that.

In OP's case though, it kinda stinks. She's gonna have to find another venue.
