Engagement/Wedding ring?

Isn;t the engagement ring pretty much your wedding ring with a band?  I hear all these people going out and looking for wedding rings - are they really just looking for the band?  I've heard some people even go looking for engagement rings - would you really return one?  i guess i'm just a little confused.... Any explanation/clarification would be awesome ladies!

Re: Engagement/Wedding ring?

  • Some girls go shopping with their boyfriends/FI to search for the ring they want. Some girls want to pick it out, some guys would rather do it themselves and have more of a surprise proposal. There are so many ways...

Most jewelers have an exchange/return policy in case the girl doesn't like it and wants to switch it for a different one.

Yes, when people say they are going shopping for wedding rings, it most likely means the bands. Again, some do it together, others do it seperately. There is no right or wrong way to go about it.
  • The engagement ring and the wedding band don't necessarily have to be a pair.  They can be completely different.  My engagement ring is a platinum solitaire that FI chose, and my wedding band will be a tungsten band that I picked out (with FI's input).

  • Most women have two separate bands.  One band is considered the engagement ring, and is worn during the wedding planning process.  The wedding band is generally a band that is complementary to the engagement ring.  Neither is absolutely necessary.  Some women don't have an engagement ring, and some women choose only to wear their wedding band for everyday wear.

I think when you hear about people shopping for a wedding band, it means they are looking for the complementary ring for their engagement ring.  There are many styles to choose from, and it can be difficult to find one that matches the e ring.

I considered having my ring recasted, because there isn't a band that fits with it.  Instead, I purchased a wedding band that I could wear alone.  I wear my e ring on my right hand and my wedding band on my left hand.

I think it's all just a personal choice.

  • My engagement ring is a solitare so FI and I went shopping for a new setting for the diamond to be mounted in.  It is a matter of choice so as PP said, it is all a matter of personal choice.

My DS was getting ready to propose to his now FI. He and I were talking about rings, what she might like, etc. I asked how much he expected to spend on the engagement ring and wedding ring and whether he'd buy a set or get the engagement ring and then find a band to go with it.  DS is 26. When I asked this his comment was "I don't want to put a lot of money in to an engagement ring since she'll just wear it while we're engaged and then not wear it again after we're married." Now DD has a huge rock in her engagement ring and lot of other nice diamonds too.  I was dumbfounded by his comment and said "you wear both rings, not just the wedding ring.  You've seen your sister's engagement ring, do you think she's going to just put that rock in a drawer and never wear it after they are married?"  He did.  He honestly did not know girls wear both rings together.

  • Haha that's so funny!  Men are often so clueless about jewelry :)

  • We went shopping a couple of times for engagement rings.  (The second time, DH had already bought the ring, he just wanted to see how he did.)  Subsequent shopping trips were to find wedding bands for both of us.  Yes, you can buy sets that include all three rings, but wedding sets don't appear to be all that common anymore, and a lot of people mix and match.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284

</div><div>I'm confused by this... An engagement ring is the ring with the big (or not so big) diamond on it that your FI proposes with. Either you both pick it out or he just picks it out. Then after you are engaged and you are planning your wedding, you go out with your Fiance and pick out a complimentary wedding band. After you are married you wear both (the wedding band first so it's closest to your heart and then your engagement ring on top- b/c who wants to put away the ring with the bling?) </div><div>

two rings. 1 Engagement ring.  2 Wedding ring/band. Some people do not have engagement rings, they only get a wedding band at their wedding ceremony.

Typically women have engagement rings. Either the guy picks the engagement ring (and possibly the wedding band at the same time) and surprises the girl with the engagement ring OR the two of them go shopping together.

Sometimes the engagement ring and wedding ring are a set, meant to compliment each other. Other times the engagement ring is bought solo and then a wedding band is chosen that will go with it.

  • i will actually have 2 bands.  one is a super skinny band that compliments my e-ring but is not a perfect match.  the other is a band that matches my FIs band exactly.  i plan to wear this one on our HM and when i don't want to wear diamonds because of activities or whatever.

most of the time i plan to wear my e-ring and diamond band.

  • Benmel31, I love that idea! Now if only I can convince my FI that 2 wedding rings should be in  factored into the budget!
  • there are two rings: engagement ring and wedding band. as one poster said, some might not have an e-ring, like carrie from sex and the city. she only had a plain band.

some people nowadays, shop both rings together. i never heard of returning the ring myself, unless the people are no longer engaged after awhile. FI and I shopped my e-ring together cos he wanted to make sure he gets the one both of us like, especially when it comes to the setting.

and recently, we've been shopping for the wedding band together (his, cos mine is a matching band with my e-ring). the reason we're shopping together for his is because he'd like to have my inputs~

i know it might sounds confusing about how many rings are there, but in some culture, they do it differently. for example, i have friends who call their "diamond ring" (which is e-ring in USA) as their "wedding diamong ring" and even told me "u'll get urs soon since ur getting married soon." and they don't have a wedding band/ring.
  • My engagement ring is a solitaire, so we went together to find a band with "enhancers" that fit around the single diamond.  There are lots of different ones to choose from, so it was more than just buying a solid band.
