Service exchange?

I'm a graphic designer, and while shopping around for different chair cover and sash companies, I noticed the company I ended up ordering them from didn't have much going on for marketing materials and a verrry basic website. I'm trying to think of a way to tactfully ask the company (which I think may be a 2 woman show) if they would be interested in an exchange of services.. i.e. I design a brochure for them to mail to potential customers or spruce up their website so that people take them seriously.. and I (hopefully) get a discount. Anyone have any experience doing this or have any suggestions?? Thanks ladies! Happy planning!!! :]

Re: Service exchange?

  • It's becoming very common, I say go for it.  I exchanged services with another knottie--she did some graphic designing for me, and I'm being her DOC.  It's win-win.Like PP said, the worst they can say is no.  Let us know how it turns out.
  • I would just ask in a non-pushy way. Maybe even include attachments with samples of your work so they know right away that you're legit and not someone trying to trade amateur work for pro services.
  • Definately go for it! Send them a mini portfolio of your work and ask if they would be interested in exchanging services, if they come back and say no to a straight swap, then ask about a discount in exchange for services - aim high!A lot of companies simply can't afford the services of a graphic designer/web designer or marketing consultant so you'll probably find where they aren't incurring direct costs themselves (i.e. hire companies that already own the items you are hiring) they will be more willing to do a direct swap, if there is a cost involved to the company (caterers, florists, car hire etc) they may be able to do a trade price deal.
  • I sent the e-mail tonight so I will let you know what the outcome is!! Thanks for all the input! :D
