Wedding Dress

So. . I've heard that you'll "know" its your dress when you put it on, but how did you know?I recently went dress shopping this past sunday with my BMs and I tried on a few dresses. I was having fun and really getting into the whole deal when all of a sudden the lady helping me brings me this thing in a bag. I kid you not, it looked like a chicken family had been stuffed inside of the bag. She was like "you're either going to love this or hate it" and from the look on my face she was thinking I would hate it. I kind of wish I had a picture of my face when she brought it over to me. . .anyways, I try it on and walk out and fall 99% in love with it. . I sniffle and everything from happiness. . however, its WAY over my budget that I was planning on spending.  First budget was 600ish, this dress. . .with the underskirt+bra thingy+ extra length because Im 6ft tall = 1200ish. . . AND the dress is on the chopping block for being discontinued (it hasn't happend YET, but could soon). I've thought hard about it and I'd love to wear it and I think I look stunning in it, but Im having a hard time with that price. The main way I can justify it is that Im saving a crapton of money by using the venue that I picked (only 200 for 8 hours) as opposed to my original location (3000 for 5 hours). However, I'd have to get a card for it because I dont have the money up front at the moment to spend on the dress. The card comes with 0% interest for 12 months, which I could pay off in that amount of time easily, but Im also not fond of credit cards. . . however, I've been told by a good friend, who works with finances, that having another one would do my credit some good since I've only got one credit card and my car loan (apparently 3 is a good number?) I REALLY REALLY REALLY want this dress, but my hesitation is extreme with the cost. . Is 8CH515 on davids bridal. . does anyone have any idea where I could get this dress for less?? (I realize Im not on my state board, but I figured maybe you guys would have good suggestions too, as far as the internet goes)I dont know what to do. . . *sigh*   Im sorry this is so long and rather venting like. .  It's been a long week already. I hope you're all doing wonderfully!! :)

Re: Wedding Dress

  • If it's going to be discontinued, can you negotiate to get it for less? The more credit you have available is usually to your benefit, and if you know you can pay it off and you love it, I would say go for it.However, I googled the life out of my dress for pricing, and there are LOTS of dresses on eBay, (and elsewhere!) if you're willing to buy a dress online. So, look into it. Good luck! It sounds like you've found your dress!
  • If you love the dress could you buy the underskirt & bra elsewhere or secondhand?  I see the dress is reduced on the website, and is not wildly over your original budget, will they not negotiate on the skirt lengthening charges?
  • Its already discounted to 850 for regular sizes, but because Im just barely in the 16w they add another 100 on, plus I need extra length, so thats another 50, bring the dress back up to 1000 (down from 1,350) which yeah, 300 off is a good deal. . but its still a lot of money. I've asked about going lower, but the lady at David's seemed pretty tough about that. Has anyone done this before there or at another shop? Like. . I realize you get 10% off of everything you get the day you get the dress, but I dont want to buy it all at once.I actually just found it on Ebay with a sweetheart neckline, instead of going straight across which I think would look fine if not better, but I'm kind of ify about ordering the dress online. Are there key things I should look for to make sure the seller / site is legit? Thanks for your advice! :)

  • I got my dress from DB and because it had been discontinued I got if for $250, originally $399. Maybe you could wait and if it does get discontinued they'll probably give you a discount on it.

  • Wait until it is ACTUALLY discountinued.  Those left in stores will be severely discounted and you can buy it off the rack (My dress was originally $900 - I got it for $250 off the rack).  If it's not at your store, you can ask the sales clerk to check the databases and see if there are any in or near your size at another store.  They will ship the dress to your home for a small fee. Dresses can usually be altered up or down 2 sizes just by taking out/in fabric at the seams.  If you need a more drastic alteration, you can add a corset back, so you don't necessarily need to find one in stock in your size.  Also, keep an eye on Ebay.  There's one listed for $350 right now, but it's a size 6.

  • Didn't finish my thought.  Ask your local board for a seamstress recommendation.  They are usually more reliable/affordable than the chain store seamstresses.

  • I LOVE your dress! It's great. Check out this one from Oscar De La Renta. Your dress reminds me of this one. http://www.brides.com/fashion/dresses/gallery/wedding_dresses/runway/designer/oscardelarenta/detail/172368?offset=46Good luck!!!
  • I wouldn't wait until it was discontinued b/c how many other brides are waiting? I would get the credit card and buy the dress now. You saved over half the cost of the dress by changing the venue. You can sale the dress when you're done with it if you have any residual guilt about it. Just be certain to pay it off within the 12 month grace period. Also, your talking about the DB credit card. Don't. If you want it to help your credit score it has to be a card you use at least four times a year and DB is a card you'll probably use once or twice in your lifetime. Apply for a real credit card and once it is paid off use it every couple of months and pay the balance in full every month.

  • I tried on a dress that I thought was "the one," and it would have been, but it was way over budget.  I had to put it behind me and just keep looking.  If I were you, I'd keep looking, but at the same time, check out some websites online to see if you can find it used for cheaper.  I sold my dress on bravobride.com.  There's several others, just google "used wedding dress".  Some aren't even used, the bride just changed her mind and bought a different dress.  GL
  • As I was reading your post and you described the chicken family in the bag...I was cracking up because that is exactly how I felt.  As I read further down I realized it was the same dress!!!  I bought it a couple of months ago.  I love love love it.  You could probably check ebay or used wedding dress sites.
  • i have more than one dream dresses.i fell for this dress.its 2000 dollars.http://weddingdress.onsugar.com/2986774and this one, dont know how much.http://www.ianstuart-bride.com/docs/4.cat_rock.htmlbut i finally fells for this mermaid gown i designed.lol i still need to design two more dresses, one ball gown one A-line.and why not to try ebay? that is if u dont mind ur dress being worn before.i personally will design it and sew it myself though.seamstress are so expensive!
  • I almost got that dress... it is such a FUN dress! I also got my dress at DB, and they give out coupons all the time, if you go to a local bridal expo and they are there, they give you a GIFT CARD if you set up an appointment to see them. Everylittle bit helps! And like the other Bride-to-be's said, you can always check online, now that you KNOW the dress you want, it will be easy to track one down cheaper. Good luck!
  • I found the dress on "preowneddresses.com" for 500. . but I was wondering if anyone here has dealt with them??
