Change ring setting?

I feel silly to even be posting about this because it's my actual marriage that I'm ecstatically looking forward to, but I have been contemplating changing my engagement ring setting lately. It is so beautiful, a 2.5 ct 6-prong set solitaire on a 1 ctw diamond band. My FI and I have been talking about Christmas gifts for each other lately (what do you get for the person you will soon be marrying?) and he keeps talking about diamond rings/earrings, so I thought I may add a halo to mine. Thoughts anyone? I don't want a halo to take away from my stone (or look too trendy) but I also thought a halo might just enhance the stone more. I'm very sentimental and I love the fact that he proposed to me with this ring that he picked out. He would be fine if I wanted to change it but will I regret it??

Re: Change ring setting?

  • I LOVE my halo.  But it's something I always liked and wanted. FI wanted my opinion when he was picking out my ring, and didn't like the halo until I showed him the right one. Anyway, we had my wedding band custom made so it compliments my ring. All things to consider.  If you're hesitant, I would wait until you're sure.  You don't want to spend all that $ and change your mind. Also, how does FI feel about you wanting to change it? GL!
  • 2.5 carats?  Lucky!  What's your secret?  ;)I'd hold off until you are 100% sure.
  • You already have a total of 3.5 carats on your finger. Do you really think that adding to it is a good idea? I think it might end up looking like too much - overdone basically. And once you get the wedding band with it, it will change the look anyway.
He pretty much had me at "hello".

  • My FI gave me my stone in a 6 prong solitaire knowing that I'd want to pick out the setting with him. I chose a halo and absolutely love it. It made the stone so much more sparkly. I would try on some settings at stores with a similar size stone as yours and see what you think. You will probably have to go to pretty high end places to find settings that are made for a 2.5 carat. It took me two months to find the right setting for me and the whole time I just felt a little unsettled about my ring. Now I love it so much.
  • Thanks everyone!! Great advice. As for my FI, he is happy as long as I'm happy with the setting. I browsed a little on my own at wedding bands so far (need to bring him back with me next time) and remember loving the way both looked together so I suppose I'll hold off until I look again. The band I love is pretty thick in comparison to the thickness on the engagement ring, which I like, and it has three rows of different-sized diamonds (smaller on the outer rows and larger through the middle). I just remember it being really sparkly. It may just be the perfect balance after all - I like sparkle but hate gawdy or fake-looking jewelry. Guess we'll find out soon!
