What is the best housewarming present you've ever gotten?

My MOH and her FI just bought a HUGE new house and, since they've never had their own place, basically have no furniture or anything.  Her bachelorette party is this weekend and one of the BM and I were going to go in on a present (up to $100).  We wanted to get her/them something nice for the new house, but wanted it to be original and cool too.  What is the best housewarming gift you've ever received?

  • Wine :-)
    Anniversary
  • Hahaha I'm sure wine would be appreciated, but I was looking for something they could use in their house for more than 1 night :)  The kit thing sounds cool!

  • I got some Home Depot gift cards and was very excited to use those. That makes me sound like a giant nerd but that's okay.
  • Since they are engaged, have they registered yet? Because the things they need may be on there. I know you may want to go off the registry, but maybe you can get an idea of what they need. Like, if they have a TON of kitchen stuff on there, then definitely something for the kitchen.
  • Did she register for her wedding yet? You could get some ideas of things they want and need from there. If you want something a little more creative I would try uncommongoods.com
  • The best thing I got was a gift card from parents to stock our cabinets with groceries. And a kit with cleaning products/kit of a bunch of Saran wraptin foilzip locks stuff like that. And a gift cert. for a house cleaning professionally before we moved in so everything was clean before move in.

[QUOTE]I have actually never received a housewarming gift.  Clearly I need to find new friends.

Actually ditto to this. If I have ever gone to a housewarming party I have brought a bottle of wine. Cliche, but hey, I would never ever turn down a bottle of wine.
  • We're moving into a new house at the end of July and while it's not huge, we also need to furnish a good portion of it since we currently reside in a tiny apartment. Speaking for me personally, Home Depot/Lowe's gift cards would be a god send! I would much prefer that than for someone to give me a decor item that may not be my style (not saying you would do this).

If they aren't registered and you aren't sure, I think gift cards are a good way to go so they can purchase what they like/need. I would also appreciate wine :)

  • I've only ever gotten one, and it was a Lowe's gift card. And it was awesome.

  • For people who have nothing, I do a chocolate chip cookie basket.

I get chocolate chips, flour, sugar, vanilla, bsically everything needed to make cookies that was not cold.

Then I get a cookie sheet, bowls, measuring cups and spoons, pot holders, 2 glasses for milk, spatula, mixing spoons.   Things needed to make the cookies.

It's always a hit.  Plus if they already have some of the items it's not a big deal.  You really  can't have too many bowls, cookies sheets or pot holders.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • A vacuum cleaner. With two cats and a rabbit, we need a good fur removal system!

  • I like any sort of kit.  If they have registered, you could use something they registered for as a jumping off point.. Figure out what they would do with it, and buy them a bunch of cute stuff to go with!
  • I've never had a housewarminng party so therefore I've never gotten a housewarming gift and I've only been invited to one housewarming party and I think I got them a gift card to Target or Lowes or something.

BUT I have been to several couples wedding showers, which around here, oddly enough are sort of like a housewarming party.

So anyways, when I go to any kind of party like this I try to bring something for BOTH people, not just something that would be geared toward one or the other.  For instance the last wedding shower I went to I ended up making the bride to be a basket with girly things like candles and picture frames, a robe which she could enjoy for a long time, stuff like that which most men could care less about, then for the guy I made a "guy basket" I attached mini liquor bottles to the top of small wooden dowels and "arranged" them so that the mini liquor bottles looked like a bouquet.  Both the guy and the girl appreciated the thought that they were both thought of individually.
