Future sister-in-law prob.

My fiance's brother got engaged 2 months after us. Yesterday my future sister-in-law and I were dicussing wedding plans and of course dresses. I old her I had ordered my gown in Aug. (our date is July '10) I asked her if she started looking and she said she has and she's only found one she loves and it's the same designer I chose my dress from. I thought that was cool. Later,we were looking in wedding dresses in mags and she said she didn't like any of them cuz she's really picky.I wanted her to show me her dress online. It turns out the dress she likes is the SAME one I ordered. I  feel really bad. I know how I'd feel if that happened to me. Her face was so disappointed and shocked. I've been looking for dresses online that she might like since we obviously have the same taste, lol! Suggestions?

  • When is their wedding?  Unless it's really close to yours, nobody is going to realize it's the same dress.  And, dresses look different on everybody, and once you add jewelry, hairdo, veil, etc. you two would really look different.  I'd say to go ahead and each wear whatever dress is right for you, even if it means you both wear the same dress.
  • Their wedding is 2 months after ours!
  • Ditto ScarletGem - I'm sure both of your personal styles will show through and work differently with the dress.  You should tell her that you are ok with her ordering the same dress if she decides to.  She will probably end up looking for something else, but it'd be the nice thing to do to let her know it'd be ok.
  • Like pp said it won't be the end of the world if she gets the same dress as you. Plus she still has time and could fall in love with a completely different dress before it's time for her to place her order.
  • My frugal self would say split the cost with her and you can both wear it, just with different accessories.

  • I'm with Sarah- If its ok with you offer to split the cost of the dress.  2 months is plenty of time for it to get cleaned and re fitted for her.  that could be really fun and could be a bond the two of you share as sisters entering into the family together- Dont make it a bad thing- make it into something really cool that the two of you share together!

  • Thanks, lakerchic, I thought I'd get flamed for even suggesting that.

  • Haha! actually, we were at our in-laws at the time and that idea came up! I said "well, we're the same size. wanna pay half?!" I don't think she's into the idea though. She seems really bummed.
  • Sorry to hear about this situation, it seems like it just an unneeded headache and quite the coincidence.  You obviously dont want your future sister in law to feel any hurt feelings.  Sharing the dress does seem like a perfect situation, but probably a stretch.  I like the idea of helping her find similar dresses to that style. ~~~WeddingJojo.com - Create a wedding website to help you share your special day!
  • Well hopefully she will find something else that she likes. There are so many gorgeous gowns. Let her know if you really don't mind that if she had her heart set on it to go ahead and get the gown.
  • Honestly, if I was wearing the dress first I might go the pay half route, but if I were the person that had to wear it the second time, I'd just assume have my own.  I agree with pp- just leave it up to her whether she still wants to have that dress.  There are so many different dresses and designers out there- she's bound to found something else she likes.
  • Well the paying half is a really good idea you could find someone to switch up the top like if its strapless you can make it a sweatheart top or off the shoulder. People wouldnt even notice.
  • Has she tried it on yet? I found when I tried on wedding dresses that the ones I thought I  would like (and look good on me) didn't end up working!  I ended up with something I wasn't expecting!
