Selecting a tux...

We just went to get my fiancee a tux and both of us kind of expected that he would be trying on different jackets to see the style that suited him best and so on (kind of the way you do with your dress!). Instead we were shown three jackets that were on mannequins and asked to select one. They 'couldn't' take them off the dummies for him to try on so we have a tux that we both think is nice but we have no idea what it looks like ON him. As it has a black shirt I think it's important to see if it works - am I crazy? Is this typical for tux rental? This was a big chain store and quite a big store within the chain, I thought they would take more time to make sure things were right and would have lots of samples, but maybe that's not the way things happen - anyone have a different experience?

Re: Selecting a tux...

  • Agree with pp, the big chain stores are not really known for excellent customer service and we had a very similar experience at the first store we went to. But, I think it's really just luck of the draw when it comes to service at the different locations. Because we wound up going to a different store, same chain, and had a completely different experience and great service. Our sales person was super helpful, FI got to try on different jackets, pants, ties, even let me agonize over white vs. ivory shirt. So my advice is to ask on your local board and find out which locations/stores are known for having better customer service.
  • Thanks guys - you confirmed our thoughts that it's worth trying somewhere else, even if it's a different store in the same chain. Nice to know the gut feeling that it just wasn't right seems to be the right one!!! We'll try again, after all, he has just as much right to feel like he's going to look his best as I do!! Thanks again!
  • We went into a Men's Wearhouse to try on a tux for FI, and were told that they didn't have any available to try on.  On of the clerks slipped us a note saying that the Friar Tux down the street could order samples for him to try on.  It was pretty hilarious. You may have to do some digging to find a shop that will allow you to try on the tuxes.  Even the Friar Tux that we found will have to order the suits that we want to try on.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
