NWR: Help us find a fridge!

FI and I are getting a fridge tonight, what do you have (brand, style) and what's your opinion? TIA!

Re: NWR: Help us find a fridge!

  • Honestly, I couldn't even tell you what we have.  I will say that you should go to the black Friday website--a ton of retailers are doing their sales early this year (i.e., right now).  If that doesn't work, go to Sears.
  • We got one on Craigslist.  Couldn't tell you what brand it is, honestly.  It's got the freezer on top, but we always run out of space in there.  When we go to buy a new fridge, I definitely want to get a side-by-side one.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. • I'm a huge fan of Appliance Direct and Scratch/Dent places.  I have no problem buying something that has a huge scratch on the side or back. That being said, I like Whirlpool or GE. If you're going to Sears - Kenmore is a wonderful brand.
  • Oh, I like side by side with ice-makers.  Bonus points if it has the door within the door on the fridge side so you can just grab milk/juice without opening the whole fridge.
  • Kennmore!  That's what we have.  We like it, ours doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles but it's really easy on our power bill.Bonus points if it has the door within the door on the fridge side so you can just grab milk/juice without opening the whole fridge. Ok.  I've never heard of this, but I want it.
  • You should also check with your utility company to see if there are any rebates in place. Part of the stimulus funds went so states to help encourage energy efficient appliance purchases. Our state won't be launching the program until spring, but it's a $300 rebate on washers and fridges.

  • Definitely make sure you get an Energy Star certified one.  They really are efficient, and like PP said, you can get tax breaks for them.

  • BTW someone mentioned buying off craiglist. While you can get good deals, be wary. If you get something too old that hasn't been Energy Star qualified, some of those can cost upwards of $165 a year to operate.

  • You may already be gone shopping, but if not - the bottom freezer models are great.  However, do NOT get one that has an icemaker in what is actually a REFRIGERATOR door.  There are a number of reasons why - the biggest is that it's really hard to get enough insulation around it to keep it frozen without also freezing your refrigerator.  Water dispenser in the door is ok.  Ice is not.

  • It depends on your price range. We splurged on ours from Home Depot. It is a GE Profile-stainless steel french door style with double draw bottom freezer. Model # PGSS5PJYSS
