Chit Chat

question about state taxes

So, I'm filing my state taxes online, and it says to only enter info from W2's or 1099's that have state income tax witheld (box 17) filled out.  Ummmm what about the W2's and 1099 I have that don't have that filled out?  Aren't I supposed to report that income somewhere?  I am getting a hefty refund from the state and I just don't want to end up getting audited and find out I didn't report income that needed to be reported.

Re: question about state taxes

  • Well, it's the chit chat board so I thought it was worth a shot.  Jeez.  I wasn't sure if this was something specific to CT or if maybe it's the same in other states.

Every state's tax laws are unique to that state.  Even if this were a Federal Tax question you'd get the same advice of asking a professional.  I refuse to do my own taxes, when I got married insisted that DH stop doing his and that we go to a CPA.

We don't even have state taxes in Tennessee, so... no.

  • I am not sure I  understand what you are asking and I am not a tax expert but FWIW you need to report all income earned.  So even if there is a 0 in box 17, anything that is in box 1 counts as income, you don't just disregard the w2 because nothing was withheld.

Also, if you are confused, and do not want to go to an accountant or tax preparer, I highly recommend using a product like turbo tax.  I use it for my business taxes.  I always did my daughter's taxes through the state's site but this year used turbo tax for her too and I was glad I did because it caught a mistake I would have otherwise made.  The prompts and instructions they give you are very thorough and helpful.

  • Well for what it's worth I did try to enter all my W2s and the ones that had a 0 in state income tax box were not accepted and I got an error message saying please enter an amount higher than 0 dollars.  So, guess I'll just take my $800 refund and be on my merry way.
