Which would you do?
DH and I are planning a trip to Orlando in February. I know we most likely can't afford to fly, as much as I'd rather do that. So, instead we've been going back and forth between taking the Amtrak or driving ourselves.
If we take the amtrak, it'll be 13hrs both ways, but we'd board at night (around 7 - 9) and get home the following morning (around 10am), so it's not too bad because we'd probably just sleep. This would cost about $300 and then a day rental or something if we wanted to go anywhere other than Orlando or the close area of the hotel. So maybe $100 there?
If we drove, it'd be probably 10 1/2 hours (including stops) and would cost about $250 in gas (including some driving around gas while in Orlando).
So while it's cheaper and 'quicker', I'm kind of torn. I feel like the train would be easier because we wouldn't have to stop and fill up on gas and wouldn't be putting the miles on the car and having to get and servicing done after the trip that could cost extra. It would be nice to have our own car while there, but I don't see us driving so much that we couldn't just call a cab or take the hotel bus where we need to go.
What would you do? Have you ridden an Amtrak for a long trip? How was it?
Sorry if this doesn't make sense. I hope it does
