Gianvi vs. Yaz

I'm not sure if this is the right board for this but I don't know where else to put it! I just started Gianvi (the generic form of Yaz) and am now reading a LOT of reviews that Gianvi has had horrible side effects for people. So far I've had none (BUT I'm only on day 2) but am starting to panic a little :) Has anyone had GOOD experiences on Gianvi? I'm mostly concerned about gaining weight and breaking out. I haven't heard too many negative reviews on Yaz (concerning weight gain and acne, anyway) so I'm wondering if I should just call my doc and see if I can switch before even giving Gianvi a chance to wreak havoc on my skin (engagement pics are in less than 2 weeks!)

Anyone have experience with this?

Call your OB/GYN and speak to a nurse.  Getting medical advice from strangers on the internet is never a good idea.  Even asking about side effects isn't reliable considering everyone's body reacts to things differently.  Your doctor's office has your chart and knows what to look for in your history to help you with your questions.

  • Everyone reacts differently to these kinds of things.  I know people who love Loestrin FE and have never had one side effect; it gave me massive migraines.

All you can do is try it and see how it goes.  There are many MANY different kinds of birth control out there.  If you don't like the side effect of this one, go back and request a different one.
  • I was on Yaz for years, along with 2 different generic versions of it. I had zero problems with the Gianvi, and found it to be less symptomatic than others I had tried (After having my son I tried different options for a bit before going back to generic Yaz). Unless you have side effects I wouldn't worry about it. The reality is, all BC pills carry about the same risk.

  • Also, forgot to add, I don't think I gained any weight at all on the Gianvi, and my skin was flawless. Now that I'm off it, though, I have broken out some.

  • I was on Yaz for years and when the generic came out they switched me to it. I hated the generic. I do have issues with generic pills in general though. Not sure why. I have since tried a few different pills none of which I liked. I am switching back to Yaz next month as it is the best birth control I have found for my body. I did not gain weight with Yaz but I did with Gianvi. I don't remember my skin breaking out with either. But as others have said everyone reacts differently to different pills so you should really talk to your doctor.

Your doctor should have discussed the possible side effects and risks of each when you first started taking the drug. Call them up and see if you should talk to the doctor or if a nurse can talk to you about the side effects.
  • Dont really know bout gianvi but I did take yaz it never made me gain weight or acne but it did cause cysts on my ovaries and I had to quit taking it. But I really think that all BC pills affect everyine different it is kind of like a trail and error thing and see how it effects you.
  • I was on Yaz for years then they switched me to the generic when I realized how much cheaper it is per month. I have problematic skin when I have not been on the BC pill, but my skin has been FLAWLESS with Gianvi, just like it was with Yaz. I've had no weight gain. The only side effect I have noticed with Ganvi is that some months my period will skip which I did speak to my GYN about and she said with this type of pill that is totally normal. Talk to your doctor if you have any concerns!

  • I was on Gianvi for about 6 months before having to switch to something else due to switching insurances and my new pharmacy (Group Health) didn't support the generic version of Yaz and I didn't want to pay a higher amount for Yaz. I never had any negative side effects but, like PP mentioned everyone is different you should definitely speak with your GYN if you're concerned. I remember my skin looked amazing, so I miss that.

  • I took Yaz for several years and have been on Gianvi for probably the last year I think. I haven't noticed any difference. I've lost weight but that's because I changed my diet. It seems to be different for everyone though.
