Is 65 dollars outrageous

For an updo for my bridal party? I searched around and it was the cheapest I could find for a GOOD traveling hair and MUA. But one of my BM is complaining how much it was. I told her she doesn't need to get her hair done, I just extended it as an option cause that's what I was doing. It doesn't seem that outrageous to me..

Just getting my hair cut in the city costs $65 so, while I don't think it's outrageous, I think I have a skewed view.

If it's too much for her, then it's too much for her.  I know you aren't requiring her to do it so it's no harm done.
  • I paid this amount twenty years ago in the midwest for a wedding I was a BM in.  Still seething that I had to pay this because the bride demanded it (and I was all of 22 and didn't know I could say no or tell her to pay up).  I don't think it's an outrageous amount in South Jersey today.

  • That's cheap for NJ.

  • Yeah I don't care if she does it or not it just got me thinking if this was actually a crazy figure. Most salons post right on their signs anywhere from 50 to 100 for an updo so for someone coming right to the house I thought it was a pretty good deal.

I don't think that is outragous since she is traveling to you.  I had one of the cheapest hair and makeup people in the region, and she was $100.00 for hair and makeup.  So, 65.00 for one or the other doesn't seem like a lot at all.
  • $65 for wedding party hair?  That is pretty cheap around my parts.  A typical every day updo (not wedding) is about $65-$75 around here.  For a wedding it jumps to $85 for a bridal party member and $125 for a bride.  And that is if you are going to the salon.

Since she is coming to your house and doing the hair for $65 I would snatch her up right now!

  • Yes, it's outrageously cheap

  • I don't think it'soutrageous.   I think that around what we paid for our BM's hair in Cape May.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Ugh.. yeah, just tell her to do her own hair... and that you won't include her in the final headcount.
  • In bridal world, it's super cheap for the area. In "Normal Everyday World" it's incredibly expensive. Everything is about perspective.
  • Sounds reasonable to me, that's what I paid for updos in Ocean County.

  • I was shocked at the prices of stuff when I was planning my wedding, so I totally get how she'd think that's expensive.  But knowing what I know now, that's within the price range I researched in my area too, so it's not too outrageous for the services being provided.

But then, since you aren't requiring it anyways, I don't see why she's complaining.

  • My girls paid $65 for their updos, and that was with us going to the salon.  This was one of the more reasonable prices I found as I searched salons.  I don't think it is outrageous at all.

If your BM is unhappy with the price, she should just do it herself or get it done elsewhere (which you don't seem to have a problem with).  Three of my girls got their hair done with me, one got it done at her normal salon, and one has a very short hairstyle that she just did herself.

[QUOTE]My salon charges $35 for an updo, but I live in a semi-rural area. I pay $65 for coloring!

I wish!  My color is $200 - a cut is $95 and a blow-out is $50.  For me, an updo would cost $65 in "the normal world".  In "bridal" world, it's $85 for the girls & $100 for me (it basically was the same price for someone to come to us vs. going to a salon.  Price difference really is in the travel fee).

ETA - I think most of south Jersey is probably similar to Fairfield county CT which is where I am.
  • OP I think that is very reasonable for NJ.

  • I once seriously paid $100 for a DOWN do in NJ. They just curled my hair and pinned a few pieces back with bobby pins. It was for a wedding, and the bride insisted on everybody going to the same salon (And pro hair was a MUST for her wedding). I figured going with something simple would drive down the price, so if that's what I paid for some curls and bobby pins, I don't even want to know what that salon would have charged for an updo.

  • So the general consensus is it's a great deal and I didn't find someone who is ripping us off. Thanks everyone. :)

She's getting married next spring so I guess she'll see for herself that it's not such a bad price.

  • That's a pretty good price IMO. I've paid around that for proms and formals. My stylist is charging $45 for an updo (less for a simple style) plus gas since the venue is an hour from where we live. I was amazed at how cheap she can do it for!
