Divorce jokes.... really annoying.

So we got married on Friday, and already i'm hearing divorce jokes from people.  Not from anyone important or from anyone I know really well.. just things like "ya know, 50% of marriages end in divorce- so one of you will end up divorced ha ha ha".  I know I should just ignore them because they are so unoriginal and corny and typical but sheesh! Shut UP!

  • I am not even married yet and I keep getting these jokes. I have one customer who keeps telling me "love is grand....divorce is $100 grand", ugh.

  • Some people think they're being funny. They're, wrong, of course. Annoying and funny are not the same thing.

  • You gotta have a real thin skin princess. At least people don't say how long till you find out he's diddling his secretary!?

  • Point out that the 50% divorce rate isn't true across the board.  The statistic has a lot of baby boomers in it who are on their third and fourth marriage in some cases.  It is also lower the older you are when you marry and the higher your education.

It's not having a thin skin to be annoyed that people are making assumptions.  If it's any consolation, I once went to a wedding where the B&G were 20 years old.  There were bets being taken in the back of the church as to when the divorce would be.  The "bookie" won every bet - 17 years later, they are still married and just welcomed their second little one.

  • People who talk about how high divorce rates annoy me anyways, whether joking or not.  To me, it is the lack of faith in marriage that helps lead to divorce in the first place.

The whole 50% thing is innaccurate anyways.  The way they've been calculating that is by just looking at how many people get married every year and how many people get divorced every year.

The problem with calculating it that way is that many people get married and divorced over and over again, while others stay married their whole lives.  If you follow couples over a period of 30 years or so, the actual figure is more like 40%.  40% still sucks, but it's better than half.

I tried explaining this to the person who said that to me today and he misinterpreted what i said.. I said "thats just because the mentality allows it to come true" or something like that and he thought i was saying something like you have to have the right mentality to remain marriage- even so, thats also true.  Then he went to boast about how he has a collection of ex- wives. Great.

  • Ignore the obviously lame troll.

Ditto TLDH, the divorce rate isn't actually 50%. It gets skewed by the few people who end up with 3 or 4 marriages.

  • Those statistics are skewed. They are pulled from ALL divorces, NOT just from first time marriages. Once you divorce and then remarry, your likelihood of getting divorced again, is higher and it gets higher with each divorce/remarriage.

Being young also increases ones odds of divorce. Lack of communication, financial issues and other things also increase these odds.

With that said, even though there is a chance it could happen, there just as likely of a chance it wont.

Ignore the comments because you can't control what people say.
