wedding dress?

My wedding is not until 11/6/11, is it to early to start looking for a wedding dress?

Re: wedding dress?

  • You can start looking now, but I'd put off purchasing.  There will still be a few collections coming out between now and when you absolutely must order, and you don't want to be one of those brides who ends up buying two or three dresses because she can't make up her mind.  Also, your size could change between now and then, meaning you'd have to spend more on alterations.

But you can get an idea of what designers and styles you like, and then you can find out when you do need to order.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • I think it's fine if you start checking them out now. I started looking at dresses & purchased/ordered one on the day I started looking & I was 1 yr and 7 months away form our wedding date.  I still to this day LOVE my dress & don't regret it. It was very helpful for me beacuse the bridal shop let me make payments on it since I had a ways to go.  Be sure though that at like David's Bridal they do NOT hold you dress there you have to take it home (my sister found that out) I got my dress from a private bridal shop & it took about 7 months to come in & she's holding it there until the day before my wedding.

  • My DD bought her dress 18 months before her wedding, because my mom was ill and it was questionable about whether grandma would be at the wedding.  DD wanted grandma to see her wedding dress, and to have photos taken.  It was fine.

The important thing to remember is to STOP looking if you buy your dress early.  If you love it, then be happy that you found it, but stop looking at any more dresses, or you might end up second guesssing yourself.

I will say that DD loved, loved, loved her dress and never looked back.  GL
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • I think it fine to start looking and possibly buy now. I started looking right after I got engaged last April and purchased it last June and my wedding is this June if that gives you any idea. It also depends on whether you are going designer (they can take  anywhere from 6-10mos to come in) or if you are going to buy from DB. DB styles change with the season, so if you are buying from there, I would wait until this time next year or so. Designers change seasons, too, but like I said, a lot has to do with the time frame. Good Luck
  • I think looking and even trying on is okay, but I wouldn't buy yet.  There will be so many new dresses by the time you have to buy one!

  • It's not too early.  I bought my dress 21 months beforeour wedding will take place.
  • I don't think it's too early to start looking, but I wouldn't buy.  I thought it was too early to start looking but FMIL and I were out and went into a store n a whim and I at least narrowed down the styles I liked and didn't like.  To be honest I thought I liked only certain styles and it turned out they looked horrible on me. It was styles that I thought looked horrible that looked great on me.  So I highly suggest looking and trying on all different styles since they look so much different on the hanger.  I would buy when it gets a little closer, that way if your weight fluctuates a little you won't have to have it altered multiple times or you never know your idea of what looks great on you might change a little.  But once you find the one do NOT look at more, you'll regret it
  • i  think that it is too early, but that's because some people change their minds alot. i bought a dress with bling factor and now i wish that i had waited and got a dress with lace instead.
