[QUOTE]Um wow?  I never thought I would say this, but thank god I live in Quebec.  We are not legally allowed to change our names here.  Problem solved.  Oh and I can assure you no child has been bullied because they have a different last name than thier mother (I don't know how a child would even come by this info) and no one has ever had to explain to someone out of province or out of country why they and their hubby have different last names. To those who say that: "I want to puke when I see things like you can keep your last name if you want to...you're married you have to change your name"  Really?  Come here and say that in public..see how fast you'll be running back to the States after.  Ignorance....

Wow, Canada sounds so incredibly enlightened and superior! What a wonderful place!
Chances are you won't find me in your post!
  • Change your name, or not change your name....it should be YOUR choice - not something that you feel you HAVE to do.

I'm not changing my last name - there was no real discussion about it.  C's argument was - I like my last name and don't ever want to change it, so why would I ask you to?  I am already getting criticized for not being "traditional".

My best friend changed her last name to her husbands - do I respect her less?  Absolutely not.  She is happy with her choice.  She has gotten criticized for being "too traditional".

A girl I work with hypenated hers. She gets comments about "being on the fence".

Are any of these choices better than the others?  No way.  You have to do what makes YOU happy, not what you think will appease others.

I didn't mean it to sound superior and if you read the entire thread you would have noticed that the comment about coming to say that here was not directed at you.  Read before posting....Someone with only 3 posts to her name should really calm the eff down. And FYI, it's not ALL of Canada, only in Quebec.

Why aren't we allowed to change our names?  No clue.  I believe it has something to do with the fact that there are so many immigrants in the country and the French Canadians are so obsessed with keeping their identity that they don't want the women to lose their French names if they marry someone who isn't French.  It doesn't really affect me, my name is Italian.

</div><div>Being from Ontario - I had heard that the same reasoning especially with the importance that Quebeckers put on their identity as French Canadians.  I also heard that people are pushing for the same legislation in the rest of the country.
