Custom engagement ring?

When we got married, DH and I didn't have much extra money, so we decided just to get a band and when our 5 year anniversary came up, we would get a nice ring.  DH has his mom's wedding/engagement ring set we want to use.  The main stone was a marquis, but is no longer there.  My question is, can we use another shape stone or do we need to get a marquis again?  Any suggestions?  TIA!

I would think you should be able to have the prongs re-shaped to hold any center stone you want. They may need replaced anyway, just because of age. I know my engagement ring was originally set for a princess cut stone, but we had it custom made to hold a round stone. Here she is.
